The shift pattern will probably be the easiest part to get used to. Remembering that everything else is reversed is the challenge to wrap your head around; turn signal, window, shifter, etc. Then, staying positioned correctly in your lane is the tricky part. I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention to the fog line, not the center line, even after I’d driven it for a while. You’re fortunate to have the opportunity to learn where you’re comfortable. My first introduction to RHD was a crash course. Landed at London Gatwick airport and had to be in Rochester, 1 ½ hours away. The only option was to rent a car. That was exciting.
It’s nice to know that Ozzie continues to generate memorable sagas. When I obtained him it was also memorable.
I’ve had Ozzie out a few times over the last couple of weeks. I’ve pretty much got the RHD and reversed shifting down. Strange thing is when I drive a LHD vehicle afterward, I catch myself drifting to the right. I’ll get used to it, despite my huge ABS (Aging Brain Syndrome).
The fun part is seeing peoples’ reactions. I’m working on a large construction project at the local university. I’ve driven to the job site twice with Ozzie. The guys with the Silverados and F150s have varied reactions. A few try to ignore it and still blatantly stare out of the corner of their eye. The majority are all over it and ask lots of questions. One of them couldn’t believe it was legal to drive it in the US. Kids!
NC has a policy that all antique vehicles from out-of-state have to be inspected for theft clearance. The good thing is they come to your house and it’s a free service. Got that done last week and was told I’ll get my title soon. I had to do the same thing with my 280z when we moved back to NC. A quick process. I have to say the NC DMV does a nice job compared to other places I’ve lived.
RiverPatrol, you’re description of starting Ozzie was spot on. Cranks a bit to get the fuel delivered, but never fails to start and run strong. The only thing I’ve done is install a new headlight switch - got a NOS switch from Kuwait for not much money. The old one worked, but was getting spotty, probably due to the higher humidity. I saved the old one. Suspect it just needs to be cleaned.
LOVE Ozzie!
