1965 G60 Ute

Rust or bling, we want to see it!

Postby G60michael » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:17 am

Hi Guys, Picked this old girl up for $200 bucks a forth night ago. Got a Tip of to the where abouts of the old girl hiding in an old shed West of Casino in Northern NSW Australia, so followed it up and scored her nice and cheep. The Only history I can share on the The Old Girl Is that it was sitting out in the paddock up that way after the original owner passed away about 18 years ago until 2 years ago when the couple I got it off brought it of the original owners wife, with intentions to restore her, but time never permitted. They got as Far as Pumping up the tyres and pushing her into the shed.

Here is the Original Photo they sent to me when I followed it up, she was covered in dust, the engine bay was a firm 5mm film of dust all over, the inside was full of rats nests, the ususal for farm find g60s.

So Tee'd up a mate to run up Friday afternoon after work, got up there which was a short 1 Hour 20 Minuet drive, Dragged her out the barn, 4 flat tyres all breaks dragging, block and tackle and half hour later she finally was on the trailer loaded up for the return trip home

Quick Dinner Stop at Casino NSW for McDonalds

Total round trip 240km, Got home 11.30pm, to late to bother looking at it, unhitched the trailer and headed for a shower and bed ready for a play early Saturday morning.

Early Saturday morning Rise and shine, headed out the yard for my first good look at thins thing in the flesh, first time I seen it was the night we picked it up. has minimal rust, defiantly very fixable, its one of the early utes that were Custom order made by Nissan from MWB Wagons, they cut down a Softop wagon, and lengthened the Wheelbase from 2500mm. This ones had a whopping 600mm chassis extension which is a super neat and tidy job, stretching her out to a 3100mm wheelbase. She Still has the Original Number Plate Bracket, Bumper, firewall mirror, Generator, Glass Bowl Fuel filter, 60s Style seats (re upholstered however)

Here is how she looked upon wakeup on Saturday

Then it was time to get her off the trailer and stuck into it :D had her running by the afternoon, I had to use a screwdriver to bridge the starter as the push button setup was out of action due to a rusted out Starter Relay. She Fired into life and purred like a kitten, was super stocked, one of the smoothest running g60s I've had yet, so quiet, and great oil pressure and no nocks rattles or hardly any tappet noise :P Was time to rewire the starting system, got a universal relay and wired it up, now It works like factory, the tray floor was rotten and fully gone, so got some marine Heavy Duty Ply and made a new floor, then it was time to put her to work.

When you've got a farm to put her to use on, and it has a very good original bumper still on it withstanded the last 53 years, you don't want to risk changing that, especially since the brakes weren't included in the sale  you brave the rusty bolts, rip it off and put it into storage for preserving and throw a bull bar on it 5892

Only thing left to do is flush and re install its fuel tank

As always, very cool score. 8-) So very Australian; doesn't need brakes, just put a bash bar on it.

I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the modifications done to extend the wheelbase, and the back of the cab to see how it was fabricated.

I wasn't aware of early custom orders made from MWB wagons. Do you have some documentation on this, or enough examples to conclude this was done? Curios.

Apparently, Australia is the land of milk and honey! I'm re-reading my Bible.... I thought it was somewhere else. I did get it on sale, possibly it contains typos?

River, the First Proper 1 piece non wagon converter ute cab was in 1966, I've seen a Dozen or so examples of earlier ones made from MWD Wagons, cut and lengthened. You Probably not to aware since no utes were sold in the states originality, but when it comes to the history of the g60s in Aus I'm pretty up there on it ;)

Here is a link i Found from a few years ago

Excellent score Michael!

Certainly you didn't loose a minute to check how it was performing and to put it to work. I'm glad to read your report.

What will be your future plans with this UTE?

Yes, you have opportunity for discovering not available here. It would be interesting to see pictures comparing the mods made to the early ones next to the mods made on the later ones; cab and frame extension.
