Rear light guards

Rust or bling, we want to see it!

Postby plateaucal » Sun Apr 12, 2020 4:30 pm

Since I felt shamed to spend more time with my Patrol, I went out and made these this afternoon. These are rear light guards that I made for the very rare, one year only, North American Spec, 1969 rear turn/stop assemblies. The additional weight of these guards should vastly improve my off road performance. I will add pictures when installed.

My fabrication skills are weak! Especially welding. I bent the curve around a piece of PVC pipe. The other bends were just a vice, muscle and a hammer to tighten the radius. I used material I had laying around. There is only one source for these lenses. But that is top secret.

My Patrol did not come with any rear lights I do not believe so I would have to source everything to put these on mine. But I would gladly pay you to get a set of lenses just in case I should be able to locate the rest!!!

Well the mounting plates can be easily fabricated. I may have some gaskets laying around. But I just gave away my only spare light receptacle. Good luck with the rest, and if you find some take care of them like your mom's wedding ring.

Justin, if you are fortunate to locate the lenses than you can piece together a pretty original look. The mounting plate in the picture was fabricated from the original, with a couple of extra holes out of necessity. The rear guard, likewise. Bent from sheet metal. When I wore this on my Patrol I used some chrome door edge trim that i got from Autozone and applied it around the edge of the lens. You could probably find a receptacle that is slightly smaller than the lens then place the lens over the receptacle with the chrome door edge trim for cushion. It would look good.

I can send you this light mount assembly that you see in the photos. I have originals and do not need this anymore.

What source did you reference to determine the design?
Thanks,

No, this is not OEM. But highly recommended. I bent some steel around the light mounting plate to fit. That's it. The lenses are hard to find and one year only and due to their orientation on the vehicle they are prone to damage. So.... just a precaution, plus I think they will look cool.

I see the meaning of your comment. I had a margarita after the welding was done so I edited my original comment to corrrect my lapse of brain function. I was referring to the lenses not the guard.
