Matt, the numbers of 1100 and 1300 are the lengths of the springs in millimeters. The Service Manual has the following data (I've copied and edited a little, with mm data in italics):

Front leaf spring
Dimensions (Length x Width x Thickness -Number) mm (in)
1,100 x 70 x 6.5 - 5
(43.31 x 2.76 x 0.256 - 5)
Free camber mm (in)
135 (5.31)
Laden camber mm/kg, (in/lb)
56.0/310, (2.205/684)

Rear leaf spring
Dimensions (Length x Width x Thickness -Number) mm (in)
1,300 x 70 x 7.5 - 5
(51.18 x 2.76 x 0.295 - 5)
Free camber mm (in)
145.0 (5.71)
Laden camber mm/kg, (in/lb)
22.0/535, (0.866/1,180)

This data is for the light duty model that we have in the USA. I didn't include the numbers for the heavy duty to avoid more confusion, and in case needed, numbers are taken from a 1978 Service Manual.

So springs are getting made. Rear end is ready for paint. Image I open the diff and find rust. Image

It's only on on a few teeth, so I think it's not a big deal. I'm really looking to restore this patrol but at what point do I just replace the rear end. The top of the teeth look great like they should. I'm thinking clean it up as good as I can close it up and run it until it breaks... any advice is great. This is the first time I have opened up a 50 year old diff... only Sean new.

I doesn't look that bad. More of a concern will be the state of the bearings, but your idea of just using it will tell. Just to be sure, open the front diff as well to check its condition. Front and rear diffs are interchangeable, and if you ever do it, the swap should include all the bearings and shims in the same position, and you don't even have to worry about calibration. Have done this a couple of times.

Also, the diff carrier bearings are unobtanium! Maybe only sourced in Colombia. There are ways to deal with it, and I did that 3 years ago. I'll dig the thread and post the link.

Huh? :o Esteban, are you looking at the same picture I am... ?

Matt- That tooth-grind pattern on the carrier is from the pinion gear hitting and rubbing against the carrier. Either the pinion pre-load was set incorrectly (and it does look to me like that rear end has been taken apart before- the tie-wire job does not look factory), or you have a bad pinion bearing, or you have a SERIOUSLY bad carrier side-bearing.

The pitting on the ring gear teeth: I totally agree that there is no issue there, at all. Pitted teeth usually do nothing except add a little noise, and a Patrol differential is hardly quiet, even when they are pristine, haha.

But I do agree that you could just throw it back together, and see how it does once it's back on the Patrol. Maybe those pinion gear grooves on the carrier are really old, and the wires were re-tied when someone had it repaired previously. (notice that the groove doesn't carry onto the end of the spider gear pin? that indicates to me that the spider gears were disassembled AFTER the groves were worn into the carrier

If you get it back together and it turns out to be shot when you try to drive it, then hit me up. I've got a couple spare diff assemblies floating around here on my parts-rigs, and I'm not that far from you.

Cool deal thank you . It definitely had someone go through it. I didn't see any metal bits when I cleaned it out and the oil was clean. My mechanic buddy thinks there old. But if I get it all together and it craps out I'll take you up on your offer.

You're totally right Robert. Sorry for not paying closer attention.

Might be worth checking the visual condition of the pinion.

I made it over to Matt's house yesterday for an evening visit. Great guy- He has a Patrol that looks surprisingly like several of mine (IE: 2 million pieces strewn about, with a crusty, dirty frame sitting in the middle. )

His powder-coated parts look every bit as nice in person as they do here in the pics, and his new leaf springs are REALLY nice (and they came from a local spring maker, to boot  )

After seeing his rear diff in person, I'm convinced that whatever had caused his pinion to grind against the ring gear carrier has been repaired- everything looked (and felt) good to me.

Thanks again for stoping by! Put me at ease for at least one of the 300 issues I'm sure are left to find. I'll post the spring info soon. I'd like to mount them and make sure a good fit before I recommend them.
