Greetings Patrol and Auto Archeologists Worldwide,

Plateaucal, a veteran High Altitude Patrollee reinforced my thoughts about taking Command and Control Vehicle 6 Cyclops over the top of the mountains around here on the jeep trails. First, CCV6C will certainly do it mechanically, but the acute angles of attack, combined with one lane roads with shoulder drop offs that would scare the dead are concerning...why? Because in order to ensure the motor is in the right gear to maintain power at all times, I would need to be in my lowest possible gear most of the time. For some reason I can't downshift without serious grinding. I have tried single, double and triple clutching but regardless.... down shifting requires force with horrible noises from the place where everything lands after it slides off the seat. That means a slightly faster than walking pace. Given the popularity of these trails I would hold up several hundred vehicles. However, it doesn't stop us from travelling the same type of trails in the lesser known places. Today we will go up into headwaters of the Big Blue Basin. Pictures to follow.

What if you try driving those stretches with the transfer case in Low. When in low gear, 2nd is a little more powerful than 1st in high, and 3rd in low faster. In that case you can down shift with the help of the synchros.

The double clutching, once mastered is great, and becomes second nature.

First gear is not synchronized (no synchros), so unless you are at or nearly at a complete stop, it will grind when downshifting into first gear. That's just the way it is.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Excellent advice Esteban. And bring your fly pole and your Texan swatter with you, David.

My concern about the Patrol on the variety of trails in this area is oriented around carburation, no synchro first and braking. There are all levels of trails but even simple but steep trails could get interesting. Engineer Pass is almost 13,000.It's generally an easy but spectacular drive. However some of the grades are steep and the roads are narrow with BIG dropoffs. There are issues with loss of power at altitude, running rich due to jetting and fuel bowl level. Stalling on a simple but steep uphill grade could be ugly, especially with drum brakes. So my advice to David is to experiment at altitude, easier grades, and maybe practice a dead stop on a steep grade with not too much exposure.

Any thoughts would be useful because this guy is serious. He is going Patrolling.

Greetings once again,

Funny things happened around a vintage Patrol.

At 8:30 am was mobbed by a group while I was trying to eat breakfast in town. Had to open the hood and go through the whole program while my biscuits and sausage gravy got colder than witch's nose.

Then our plan to go up to Big Blue Basin was uneventful.....until stumbled into a wedding on Alpine Plateau, literally 50 miles from nowhere. The Patrol was quickly commandeered by the wedding photographer as a prop.

The 14,800 ft peak in the distance was scales by yours truely in less than 5 hours...side note and yes I'm still patting my own back.

Just a day in the life.

Patrolling with passion,
L60Boerne

I'm sure the pics aren't in sequence, sorry.

I am guessing, but maybe your wife is sold on the concept. Good times.

Hunting trip? Unit 65. Next year? I'll show you around and we can hike as high as our lungs and sensibility allow.
