Lower radiator hose 1978 G60

Original and compatible parts

Postby ozscott » Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:29 pm

I am having trouble locating a lower radiator hose for my 1978 G60. The Gates hose that I found is way too small, and all the parts places I have been to have a small hose as the lower radiator hose, usually Gates. As you can see in the photo it is quite a long hose, which also accommodates a T piece for the heater, and then a small piece that attaches to the block. Any thoughts?

Hi mate, i had the same problem, easiest way is to buy 2 of the shorter early hoses and trim them to suit, the big T piece will have to move to where the 2 short hoses join but it still works ok

Awesome reply Reddog thanks Dave. I seen this first hand on Reddogs cousin's G60 and it looks relatively factory so I'd be going that way.

I know its bit of a pain in the butt, though I don't know of any hoses otherwise suitable.

With The later heater and later radiator you do as Reddog has shown,
But regardless of what model G60 you had its actually a pain either way as the earlier ones that have a heater has the lower hose has the barb for the heater hose Vulcanised into the hose, new hoses do not have this Feature.

So with the early ones you need to make, or find a later style heater Hose "T" piece section like yours and trim the hose so it will sit nicely and look good, theb add the "T" Piece then a short straight bit onto the water pump. One good thing is the earlier radiators also had a leg that came out the bottom tank and bent up hence the hose often listed doesn't suit the late Radiators.

Either heater/radiator combo there's no direct fit up, but both easily sorted.

Hope this Helps cheers G60Mike

I have used this hose:

Dayco 70623CS id: 1-3/4"
This hose can be used (with some cutting) for the upper and lower hoses.

Hope you can find it.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of this. :ugeek:

Thank you for the information. I looked at the hose I got from Burson's, which they said was the lower, and did think, if I had 2 of these I wonder if they could be made to fit. You have confirmed this for me, so back to Burson's I go!!!! I will also check out the other Dayco number. The radiator place that recored the radiator had a box of odd hoses which they had had for years with no numbers or info on them. I hunted through the whole box and could not find anything that even came close to the lower radiator hose. But thanks, I feel that I have a plan now.

If it helps, link below contains info on radiator hoses available in Australia that can be modded to suit 60 series Patrols...about halfway down the page.

Thanks for the info re the lower radiator hoses, I have ordered the lower Ford rad hose which should be in this week. As for the connector T my radiator place said they had none and would have to make one. I noted that Johnny Roadkill's shop had it in stock. Any chance they have another, or someone know where else they could be found? I have seen the thread re making one up, and I am happy to go down that path if one cannot be sourced elsewhere.
