G’day all,

https://expeditionportal.com/the-four-wheel-drives-of-australia/

A very nice photo essay on an array of mostly newer off-road vehicles common down under. At one point though the author does cover older vehicles and includes several shots of Patrols, including a very fetching LG60 complete with caravan and boat. Much great eye candy here. Cheers!

Very interesting story and perspective from a visitor.

Yes Australia is full of 4WDs, many of which are highly configured - high lift, big wheels, bull bar, back bar, winch, long range fuel tanks etc as well as many modern days comforts (air con, shower, filtered water, CB radio, Sat phone etc).

Then you get into the caravans and camper vans they tow. These usually have all the modern conveniences on board.

There is a large portion of people who have retired and have purchase a 4WD + van for large sum of $$$$ - anywhere between $100,000 AUD to $250,000 AUD and go off to explore Australia. These are referred to as 'grey nomads'. There are 1000s criss-crossing Australia. Many of the remote areas now have graded 'highways'.

This is why I have a G60 Patrol and a tent. Its all about the spirit of adventure!

We have the retired travelers as well. We call them snow birds, because they come south for the winter then head back north for the summer.

This is what intrigues me about Australia. We have nothing like this in all of the continental 48 states, as big as we are. Alaska is wild but takes a boat or a tundra equipped vehicle or airplane. The beach country in the lower 48 is settled and only a boat will find you adventure. BTW, I have lurked on that website many times. Great info. I am currently running a 2017 Ram 2500 with a pop up camper on the back. That is our expedition rig.

Yes, I've been on that site many times too. It makes me want to "drop out" for a year or two and jin them. I would if I could......I should.
