Anybody else running a Carter / Motorcraft carb?

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

My 64 Patrol came from PO with a Carter / Motorcraft carb model number 62253? Anybody else running one? Instead of having mine rebuilt I bought a new one for $72.00 which, seemed pretty cheap. Just curious what kinda input people have.

That carburetor is probably a Carter/Motorcraft YFA. I have one installed in mine that came from a 1980 Ford Bronco (6 cyl, 300 cid). It's been over 12 years and runs really good. It looks just like this one on Amazon:

I got rid of the electric choke and installed a manual conversion.

I think that is the one Eddy the Eagle put on the Red 65 Patrol but I will not know for a week or two. If so, he said it works great.

Not sure about the MPG yet. I gotta drop the tank, change the oil, install ignition switch, install battery, and a few other things before I attempt to start mine.

I do keep tabs on my fuel mileage at every fueling, and has been doing that forever. For me is a simple way of knowing if something is not right. The numbers I currently have are since I moved to the States 14 years ago. In that time I have driven 20,000 miles. For the first 3 years I had the original type carburetor, the Hitachi VC42, and then I switched to the Carter YFA. The numbers came as a surprise to me, since I thought that the Hitachi was more fuel efficient. Bear in mind that my driving is normally 10 miles of light traffic streets where I don't even have to brake, and 10 miles on a 50mph highway. These numbers are not offroad.

Hitachi VC4212.7518.4
Carter YFA13.7917.04

The Carter YFA gives the engine a little bit more power and it can easily rev to 3800rpms, I used to have the Hitachi VHA carburetor (Patrols from 69 and up) and performance was on par with the Carter YFA, but at a lesser fuel economy.

Volkman,
Turns out Eddy bought a new Rochester B for our red patrol.

Esteban/Volkman
I have the Minion Missile at the mechanic and the word back is that the carb that I sent out to be rebuilt is still in bad shape and unusable. I'm thinking about taking your recommendation and putting a brand spankin new Motorcraft Carb. Question for you - does it need any adapter plate, or does it bolt right up? The minion missile is missing the linkage for the manual choke, which i'd like to put back (I bought a cable a while back off of ebay and it is in my parts pile). How hard was it to convert the electric choke back to manual?

Also noteworthy is that the top of my intake manifold where the carb bolts up to is warped. I have the one that is sitting on the old '67 motor that came with the chassis that I disassembled a few years ago. I think they should be compatible. Hopefully it is not warped. If they are not compatable or it that one has issues too, I'm guessing it would be relatively easy to have this machined down to be flat again.

Appreciate the help and advice.

Don.
