Brake shoe retainer question. Circlip or hairpin

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Has anyone tried using a hairpin (basically a 2-sided cotter pin) instead of a circlip on the pins that hold the brake shoes to the backer plate? Seems like they would be easier to work with.
Thanks, David

I don't know the specs but I think hairpin clips are weaker than circlips.
Beyond any hope for intervention

River, I had that same hunch as well. I snagged one of each at the hardware store this morning just to get a feel for them. Circlip it is.

Shipped front & rear shoes to Ft Wayne, IN to get re-lined this week. Waiting on all new cylinders from AU to arrive. New flex brake lines all around as well.

Thanks for the quick response.

Folks in Ft Wayne called me back to let me know the brake shoes have been relined. Great turnaround time. Total was $356.00. Just keeping the crew apprised.
