Cabin Soundproofing/Deadening

I’ve been looking at reducing the cabin noise.

In the cabin of my G60 with just some carpet on the floor it rates about 80dB. I find this really too noisy for my ears!

In researching some options there seem to be two main options (via ebay.com.au):

Stick on rubber/butyl with a metal heat shield

Dynamat http://www.dynamat.com/automotive-and-transportation/automotive-restoration/dynamat-xtreme/

Car Builders http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/19sq-f-Car-Sound-Deadener-insulation-material-w-application-roller-dampening-mat-/162059429381?hash=item25bb7ea605:g:T-8AAOSwn9lXKePm

From Hong Kong http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2M-X-1M-Sound-Control-Door-Roof-Trunk-Floor-Heat-Deadner-Insulation-Noise-Reduce-/291950155106?hash=item43f995d562:g:-GAAAOSwiCRUmSt9

And I’m sure there are more options available

Brush on or spray sound deadener

Motospray http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motospray-Sound-Deadener-Brush-On-4L-/321892831864?hash=item4af24ed278:g:u5sAAOSwI-BWHWfs

Unknown http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Automotive-Paint-Sound-Deadened-4lt-1lt-600ml-S-C-One-Price-66-95-p-up-/232110322740?hash=item360ada7434:g:H~0AAOSwYIxX~F3n

Silent Running http://www.silentcoating.com/ This sounds great but not available in Australia and not on ebay.

My concern is if the vehicle gets wet, will these products encourage rust? This seems to be a bit of a downside on paint/spray. I did think I would treat all metal with rust inhibitor and paint them before applying sound deadening.

So what are your thoughts on reducing noise in the cabin?

Look into some stuff called Lizard Skin. Ive heard its some of the best stuff out there but I haven't used it personally.

actively watching this one because I can't hear myself think in my Patrol.

We can't hear our kids screaming in terror in the back of our Patrol... Isn't that the desired/intended byproduct? ;-)

A bit of an update since not a lot of response from the forum.

What I have decided to do:

I have just a cab/chassis G60.

First all metal will be treated with rust converter then painted before the following are applied.

Wheel guards/arches

Coat the inside of the wheel arches with paint on sound deadener. I will give it a few coats.

Concerns with using paint on sound deadener are that it is difficult to get off in the future and it may hold water close to the metal to cause rust. I think for my project these concerns are minimal.

There are a number of products out there (Lizard Skin not available on Oz ebay) but this is readily available locally and affordable ($45 for 4 Litres).

Cabin Floor (external) and Transmission Tunnel

Coat the underside of the cabin floor with paint on sound deadener. I will give it a few coats.

I will follow it up by additional sound/heat proofing matting. Brands like Dynamat are popular in the US but we have a couple of local producers of similar stuff in Australia –

dBKill 21 sq ft for $105.

and

Underdog – 42sq ft for $120

Bonnet and Engine Firewall – Engine Bay

I don’t plan to use the paint on deadener due to heat but will use insulation.

Engine Firewall – Internal in the Cabin
Doors – internal

I will just use dbKill or Underdog in places where you can’t see it.

Flooring

Carpet looks like it will absorb sound (and water!) so multi layers seem the go. I will put dbKill or Underdog under the carpet. The carpet will be removable in case it gets wet.

Ideally I would love to get a moulded carpet (incorporating sound deadener) but of course that are not available for G60s. I approached some Australian makers and managed to get a quote for $1,200 but just for vinyl.

Anyone know of a reasonable priced supplier?

Vibration Pads

I decided to replace the 8 vibration pads between the cabin and the chassis.

I used these “BLACK WAFFLE RUBBER - ANTI VIBRATION PADS FOR MACHINERY”

$10 for four.

Well I will see how all that goes. I will report back when it is done – some months away.

In the meantime I use my Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones (no music). They just take out the wind noise as well as all the big squeaks. In some respects a perfect solution for highway driving. :D

All good ideas. One of my Patrols has a very heavy layer of undercoating which has helped make it quieter than the others. Carpeting or floor mats would probably also help. And definitely the Bose will work, I love those things.

My insulation project is now pretty much complete.

I managed to get the DB level down from about 93DBs to 85DBs. Its not an exact science, measuring the DBs that is. I used an application on my iPhone to measure the DBs and travelled the same roads.

The DB meter bounces around. And I use an 'average'. All windows up and vents closed. I do have a cab/chassis Patrol.

However the DBs are still high BUT the high pitch sounds are gone :D . So really there is far more benefit that reflected in the DB meter!

What I did:

* Painted on sound proofing to guards, under cabin flooring
* Replaced rubber around doors. I managed to cut down the wind whistle greatly. This provided the most noticeable benefit.
* Stopped windows and doors rattling.
* Internally on the floor/transmission hub I placed sound proofing material and carpet (all removable). This seemed to cut down the high pitch clutch noise/rattle. I still need to adjust the accelerator pedal as I don't get full volume!
* Insulated the cabin roof internally. This was glued on.
* Added under bonnet insulation. Again glued on.
* Replaced the vibration pads on the body.

I'm uneasy using stick on insulation due to potential rust problems. I have only used that when necessary.

Cost was under $250 AUD. I used various insulation material. There seems to be an insulation type for each part of the vehicle.

I really haven't insulated the cabin side of the firewall - mainly due to the difficulties of fastening it. I will look at doing that when I have free time.

I still need to add a little more insulation to under the seats which I will do when I put new seats in.

I haven't placed anything in the doors (too hard to get to) nor on the inside rear of the cab (I might do something there one day).

So now I travel in an acceptable noise range :) . My Bose headphones are kept for air travel. :D

I think the $$$ spend were well worth it.

Any important prep you did before applying the Motospray Sound Deadener?

When I had the guards (fenders) off I cleaned (wire brush) them down the applied rust converter to the inside. I then painted them with anti rust paint. Then painted on the sound deadener (two coats).

Under the cabin floor I did the same, but I couldn't reach all areas and it was difficult applying the sound deadener.
