Postby jwgreen » Thu Jan 16, 2014 4:51 pm

Does anyone have a source or compatible part for these?? I thought I had found some somewhere a while back but cant seem to locate them anymore. Mine were rusted/broken so I need a replacement.

The next generation of Patrols that followed the G60, the MQ or 160 series came without that type of vent, that's supposed to act one way, letting air out, and preventing water from going in.

Instead, what they did on the MQ, was a vent plug with a long hose to a level above fording depths. That's what my brother did and modified his Patrol. From what I recall, he suffered a lot less from oil leaks after that, and never got any water inside. Just a thought in case you don't find the right vent/plugs.

Good luck.

If you're considering any off-road work I suggest you add some extended breathers up into the engine bay to avoid taking any water into the diffs. I have done this on my GU and will do it to the '72 and HP

I am in need of new vent plugs for my newly re-built axles. I came across this old post which is directly on-point, so I am resurrecting it. If anyone has modified their patrol with either different vent plugs or a different venting set-up, I would be very interested in knowing how you solved. If anyone has a compatible replacement part, that too would be good to know.

Thanks all.
Don.

ARB sells a differential breather kit that looks like it will work. As stated in the video, this can probably pieced together pretty easily using other components (I'm thinking brake line or fuel line) without having to purchase the whole kit. It's a pretty interesting video and explains the need for the breather. I'm sure most of you knew this already, but it was pretty helpful to me. Looking at the plastic line and connectors, I'm not sure I would want to go with that, or go a different route. I'm not planning on fording rivers in the near term with my Patrol, but this looks like a pretty easy modification to do --- and you never really know what mother nature will throw at you.

Interesting to see the video, although is rather long. Has some good explanations.

Found this at Summit Racing, but no info about the thread.

My brother just installed long tubing with a U shape at the open end, and placed high above the axle. At the rear axle is more difficult since the bed floor is rather close, but at the front axle you can ran as high as you want. The transmission and transfer covers also have them, but not sure if they are the same size.

My 1977 Patrol had vent lines put on by the PO.
Basically they have a copper (??) tube coming out the diffs/gearbox/transfer case. This tube looks like brake hydraulic tubing but a little wider inside. This tube then linked to plastic (PVC) tubing that go all the way to the engine bay.
The original vents (with a little metal tube) are mounted in the engine bay. The plastic tube then connects to each of them (4 in all).

This is the tube on the rear diff.

The plastic (PVC) tube is tucked up on top of the chassis and seems reliable enough.

EDIT. Picture of vents in engine bay. (side on !!!)

would like to put some new fittings in my diffs for a breather setup in the engine bay. do the OEM pieces just simply unscrew from the diff? Does anyone know the thread size of them? will something like a 1/8 NPT fitting screw in?
