Front Axle Hub Grease Seal

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

I'm looking at replacing the front hub/knuckle inner grease seal as indicated in the following diagram.

Grease Seal.jpg

The part book states 40579-44000 as the part no. I'm finding 40579-C6000 for the part on ebay. See https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inner-Swivel-Hub-Seal-suitable-for-Nissan-Patrol-G60-MQ-GQ-40579-C6000/282661129104?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Will the 40579-C6000 fit?

Also can I just replace the grease seal without stripping down the hub? It looks like the seal is split but I'm not sure.

The knuckle flange inner grease seal can be replaced without dismantling anything else. The original has a split design. If the one from eBay doesn't then you'll have to dismantle everything.

I guess that at the price you have found them on eBay, it won't hurt buying them and giving it a try. So please post some pictures of it. It makes sense that Nissan didn't change the seal diameter of the knuckle flange.

Thanks Esteban.

I think the seals on eBay are of split design. I have asked them to confirm this.

Its pretty nice to be able to replace them with out dismantling everything else :)

EDIT:
Just ordered 4 seals. The metal ring is split but the rubber grease seal isn't. One guy I spoke to said you just cut them. I'll try that.

Now added to my project list. Will report back when done.

EDIT:
I just did a search on eBay for "40759 Nissan" and it turned up about 20 more grease seals that look like they fit. One said fits Patrol G60 and Nissan Navara NP300 2009-2015. However they are all more expensive!
Some were original and they did have a split in the rubber.

One site said they are just dust seals, there shouldn't be any grease in there. Is this true????

I fitted one grease seal today. I'll do the other one tomorrow.

It was a fairly simple task. It took less than an hour. There was no need to dismantle the hub. I cut the new grease seal and placed the cut at the top.

The old grease seal was split. It had two very short pins joining the split. I tried reusing them but to no avail. The old one didn't have a metal ring at all.

So in fitting the new one I needed to refer to several manuals before I worked out which way the went together.

The metal ring gets fitted first, followed by the grease seal.

You are looking at the seal from the inside

The metal ring got a little distorted working it into place. The grease seal was easy.

I then put the seal retainer and 6 or seven bolts on and tightened them up slowly and in turn so the seal would seat correctly.

Hopefully no more grease leaks!

Excellent progress. Thanks for the detailed pictures and descriptions. This will help a lot.

Can you take some measurements of the seal that’s not installed yet or if there are any markings? If it’s already installed, then some measurements of the originals?

Thanks.

The seller description

Inner Swivel Hub Seal for Nissan Patrol G60 MQ GQ

This part is a new inner swivel hub seal for the front axle
This is the large seal which "wipes" the swivel ball
Suits all Nissan Patrol G60, MQ and GQ from 1959 to 1997
Part number for reference: 40579-C6000

The second hub seal took less that 15 minutes to install - super fast once I once I knew what I was doing :D

The reason I replaced the seal was because the back of the brake area was covered in grease. The swivel ball also had grease on it, just a light coating, where it should be clean, smooth and shiny.

And just a minor edit to my previous post. The seal I removed did have a metal ring but it was bonded into the rubber seal, where as this on the metal ring is separate.

Excellent info Peter. Really appreciate your help.

Will try to source them, since the eBay seller doesn’t ship to the USA.

I just got a 5 piece set that is for a 1987 Y60 on ebay for $15. The retainer ring is a 2 piece that will not work on the L60 but the other three parts might be similar to what you used.
