1967 Patrol Soft Top "Edgar"

Builds, refurbishments, restorations, upgrades

Postby Edgar » Wed Feb 06, 2019 1:09 pm

Meet Edgar, our "new" 1967 Nissan Patrol Soft Top. We will
be giving him a lot of attention over the next long while. I am
moving this over to the project section as Edgar is definitely
classified as a project now. We found him literally under an
overhang of a barn in Wallsburg, Utah. He had been used as a
snowplow from 1968 to 1979 for a restaurant up Provo Canyon.
When the state widened the road the restaurant was torn down
and Edgar was retired to the barn. He has not been registered
since 1979 and has 38,004 miles.

This is where we found Edgar. He has had a huge plow attached to him for a very long time.
The hydraulics actually work but we plan to remove the plow and sell it. Anyone need a Plow?
The interior is a little rough but mechanically he runs. We started him up and drove him onto
the trailer for the ride home.

Trivia: We named our Patrol Edgar after my grandfather, Edgar Cordon, who died in 1967.
We drove the Patrol off the trailer and into the garage. We have a lot of work to do.
We found the old Pepsi can under the passenger seat, a testament to how long the
Patrol has been parked. Western Airlines was acquired by Delta in 1986.

The Tear Down Begins

We started stripping Edgar down. First out came the seats.
The seats looked horrible but once we cleaned them up, removed
the old material and took them down to their frames and springs
we have new hope for them. The owners manual had mentioned
that the driver's seat was adjustable. Mine was frozen. We worked
on the mechanism and voila, now we have a functioning, adjustable
seat. We were surprised to find ball bearings in the seat tracks. Speaking
of which, I was inspired by Mattbob53's powder coating so my son &
I built a powder coating booth and our first victims were the seat rails.
They didn't turn out to bad. Definitely going to do more powder
coating with Edgar.

Edgar has been carrying a 6 foot cast iron snow plow + accompanying
hydraulics and mounting brackets for years. This has destroyed his
suspension. The front leaf springs have zero curve to them, flat as
pancakes. It was time to cut those things off. It was nice to see what
Edgar looks like without all of that stuff on him. I don't like the tubular
front bumper and would like to put on something that looks factory.
We would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

We realized after investigating the price for replacement parts that a "donor" vehicle was in order. We found a 1967 Patrol hard top in Boise, Idaho so last Saturday Tanner and I made a roadtrip. We met Kyle, the owner, who loves Patrols. He had owned a '63 Patrol for several years. He purchased this one in Central Idaho with intentions of restoring but never got around to it. He had torn it down and done quite a bit of prep work on the pieces which is awesome. It is a numbers matching Patrol and the frame and panels looked good. However the engine is seized up. I don't know if it can be rebuilt but luckily Edgar does not need an engine. We enlisted the help of my college roommate and his wife and loaded up a U-Haul car carrier and the back of my pickup. We were back in the Salt Lake area by 7pm. 10 hours of driving ended in success. Now Tanner wants to keep this one and fix it up so who knows. We will take it step by step. Upon closer investigation, it appears that the windshield frame and dash components are from a later model Patrol. It has two air vents under the windshield vs. the three on Edgar. There are always surprises.
