Lower knuckle flange bearing

Original and compatible parts

Postby plateaucal » Sat Mar 02, 2019 7:46 pm

Does anyone have a part number for the lower bearing. The knuckle flange is what the the front spindle housing pivots on. It looks like a typical cone type roller bearing but I would like to buy the part before I knock out the old one. Thanks in advance!!!

I did another search for just "knuckle" on the compatible parts list and found a match. Does anyone know what year this fits or are they all the same?

The bearing is the same for all the years. Older models only have a bearing at the bottom and the cones at the top, and after 69 or so, they come with bearings at the top and bottom.

These are the ones I purchased some years ago and are still sitting on the shelf

Thanks Esteban. My 69 has tapered roller bearings top and bottom and they appear to be the same. The Repair manual doesn't show this but shows the older style. The assembly instructions should be close but may require some modifications and different shims.

Well, so far so good, I thought I would post up some little things that may help one in the future. I shimmed the lower bearing according to the table in the Service manual. I believe that this sets the proper center distance. I am no too sure what to do with the upper one since it changed on the 1969 models but it appears to have the same bearing so I will replace that too, as it feels a little wonky now that it is installed. For the upper shims I may just go for a solid drag on the steering knuckle but maybe not as much as required for early models (20-22 lbs). That is a snug bearing. Any thoughts out there?

While I am at it I will replace the swivel ball seal (ordered from the Land Down Under https://www.allfourx4.com.au/epages/sho ... d2aca03f/?, ) and the hug grease seal (available on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/TCM-65X88X12TC-B ... B01BUUP2AQ ). The bearings are from Autozone with a number as per the Compatible parts list. I used a small Autozone Pitman arm puller 27022 to great effect for removing the bearings from the bearing cap. A long 1/4" punch is necessary to knock out the races.

If I run into anything else I will post it up.

The process is not that different.

There's another service manual in the Patrolabilia section: is the 19787 Service Manual that was uploaded by member azsteve (where are you?). It has this procedure in Section FA for the knuckle bearings, that applies in your case:
---------
INSTALLATION
Install front axle in reverse order of removal,
noting the following:

1. Install bearing race, place bearing race in
position and tap race lightly until it seats in axle
housing.

2. Dip knuckle flange roller bearings in grease.
Fit O-ring on each knuckle flange cap. Press in
greased roller bearing to knuckle flange cap.

3. Place knuckle flange on axle housing with
steering knuckle arm toward front of vehicle.
4. Install upper and lower bearing caps on
knuckle flange with shims. Adjust upper and
lower shims so that knuckle flange turning torque
is 1.0 to 2.9 N-m (10 to 30 kg-cm, 8.7 to 26.0
in-lb).

Note: Evenly distribute total number of shims to
upper and lower bearing caps. Failure to
do so may cause misaligned centering of
inner and outer shafts, resulting in undue
strain on and wear of parts.

Available adjusting shim
Thickness mm (in)
0.075 (0.0030)
0.127 (0.0050)
0.254 (0.0100)
0.762 (0.0300)

5. Equally tighten four nuts securing cap until
bearing cone does not turn when knuckle flange is
turned back and forth.
Tightening torque:
Knuckle flange cap fixing nut:
19 to 21 N m
(1.9 to 2.1 kg-m, 14 to 15 ft-lb)

6. Torque load for turning knuckle flange at
edge of steering knuckle arm is 44 to 98 N (4.5 to
10 kg, 10 to 22 lb). Add or remove shims to
upper bearing cap until correct turning load is
obtained. When measured resistance is low, re-
move shim(s); when it is high, add shim(s).

7. Place grease seal on knuckle flange. Install
bolts that secure grease seal guard to knuckle
flange.
Tightening torque:
Grease seal guard fixing bolt:
10 to 11 N.m
(1.0 to 1.1 kg-m, 7 to 8 ft-lb)

Excellent! But it seems that steps four and six contradict each other. Step 4 implies an equal number of shims top and bottom with a subsequent recommended torque load and step 6 says to add or subtract shims at the top to get a certain number of pounds of tension at the steering connection (which is from the older manual). Hmmm. My inclination is to follow to step four and stop.
