Ok, here they are, side by side...
NOS Nissan 38189-44000 on the left, AVX TC50X73X12 on the right.
I tried to order a set of the OEM seals via Amayama last week, and the order got declined due to out of stock; so I'll be using my remaining NOS seals on my 62 resto, and will use the AVX seals on my 65 build.
Both are double lip, but the OEM seal has a wider span between the lips, and the OEM seal is double-spring, whereas the aftermarket seal is single spring
Aside from that, the bore and outer diameters are spot on, and I see no reason why this AVX seal would not provide more than adequate sealing.
AVX also makes a thinner (9mm) version of this seal TC50x073x9 and the lip on the Transfer case output shaft housings is probably wide enough that you could probably butt 2 of the 9mm seals back to back if you wanted extra protection from water intrusion.
One other trick for keeping shaft seals extra water and oil-tight, that I learned from working on outboard engines, is to fill the inner lip with Marine grease before driving the seal into place.
