Decided to start on disassembly of the other driveshaft last night and it definitely looks like it might have been out before... cannot imagine the factory put the yokes out of time!

Finished up disassembling the driveshaft. Apparently it has taken some hard hits in the past. One end came apart pretty easy and the other end the 2 caps in the spline end of the yoke took about 30 minutes of pressing and de-burring and then repeating several times. The hole must not have been perfectly round, I wound up shaving some of the yoke while pressing. Fortunately I have a spare that came apart nicely.

I have accumulated quite a nice collection of vintage dirt/grease from the 4 universal joints!

Took out the axle this weekend, it was surprisingly easy. Got started on the disassembly and cleaning.

For those interested in the weights... the axle housing with the differential comes in at 130 pounds. On a side note the transfer case is 120 pounds, transmission is 75 pounds and the PTO is 25 pounds.6310

Got started back on putting the front axle together. The knuckle bearings were pretty much shot, ordered a pair of new 30304A bearings. I had purchased some later model knuckle seals to try but they were smaller diameter. My original seals still looked and felt okay so I refused them.

Excellent progress. The pictures are great!

What was the condition of the “cones” that go at the top, and of the matting surface? Do you have a picture of them?

Later models have bearings at top and bottom.

I did not take any pics of them but I was able to crop the photo but not sure they show much detail. The had some wear but the cone and the tapered bushing both looked smooth with no uneven wear.6374

It has been a busy spring so far and I have not been able to work in the garage as much as I had hoped. It might only get worse in the next few months but I was able to get a little something done over the weekend. Go the axle back together and started installing the disc brake conversion I made earlier this year. I have posted some details of the build in the modification area of the forum.6376
