Fastener grade

Bottoms out? Shimmies? Shackles, springs, shocks, steering linkage etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Suspension' category are here.

All,
I need to replace nut and bolt (Items 16 and 17) http://www.carpartsmanual.com/nissan/pa ... ht-loading.
Are these grade 5 or grade 8 fasteners?
Thanks,
Keith

#16 is a greasable shackle, #17 is a castle nut. I don't know that they are graded.

Castle nut would indicate cotter pin. No pin shown in diagram? Why LB, oh Why?

 You're right, I was thinking of the other end. Not a greasable shackle, although I have seen greasable bolts for that location before. The nut is a lock nut. Probably should be grade 8, for the bolt at least.

X2

That bolt has to be of a very high grade. Many members have had to cut the bolt because it has deformed under load and doesn't want to come out. The bushing that goes inside shouldn't rotate. The bolt is tightened to 65 to 87 ft-lb.

I, being one of the "cutters" agree that the bolt is high grade... it did not want to be easily cut!
