My 1969 Patrol

Hello everyone!
Here is my Patrol. I just picked it up yesterday. I have lots of work ahead of me but I'm looking forward to it. It does run but is having an issue with the fuel pump. I am going to start by rebuilding the carb and then bleed the brakes. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on what I should do next or even overall.

The photos aren't great. I only have a few of it outside and now its tucked back in my garage so I can work on it.

Welcome, glad to have another 69 on the Forum. Just ask for info and many members will offer their advice.

Welcome! Nice Patrol! It looks like it can definitely be very reliable without too much work.

Interesting - it is a 'true' '69 yet it still has the VIN plate on the radiator core support. Is there also a VIN plate on the door jamb of the driver's door? If so, pic please? And, if you post pics of the engine number on the engine and the VIN number on the frame, I'll add your Patrol the the Patrol Registry.

So how does it run? What are your plans for it? Keep us posted.

Here is the picture of the door jam one. I will try to get the others this afternoon.



My initial plans were to get it running and driving well then clean off the camo paint with some oven cleaner to see what the original paint looks like. I want to keep it as original as possible but might make a few small changes and see how it goes.

I'm intrigued. I haven't heard of using oven cleaner as a paint remover before, but knowing how caustic the stuff is it wouldn't surprise me. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Thanks for the welcome! I will need some help with a few basic things.

Do these trucks only take leaded fuel? I read on another site that they do but I may be mistaken.
Does anyone know a good carb rebuild kit I could use?
I was told to use an oil with a zinc additive. Is this correct?
Where is the standard fuel pump location? I have an electric pump in the engine bay and was told to move it closer to the gas tank.

I will probably have some other silly questions as well. Thanks for your patience.

Hi Andrew these are supposed to take leaded fuel, you can run it without, but the lead actually lubricates the valves. I reccomend using the lead additive whenever possible. I believe the carb is a single barrel rochester, kits are available at any parts store. To double check look right under the choke linkage on the top piece of your carb. It will say rochester there if it is. Also your original mechanical fuel pump would be on the left side of the block just above the oil pan between the motor mount and the oil filter. If you have an eletrical pump, there is probably a blockoff plate there now. The reason for mounting an electric fuel pump closer to the fuel tank is to pressurize as much of the fuel line as possible. This raises the boiling point of the fuel in the line. If you are not having a problem with vapor lock, i wouldnt move it. HOpe this helps.

Welcome to the forum... And to anyone trying to clean off aftermarket paint. Search the VW sites (thesamba) it's all the rage over there, getting back to the original paint. And linseed oil will work as a good rust preserver.. but it needs to be re-applied every once in a while..
