Would like to hear from all those who retrofitted their patrols to 16" wheels from 15"s. Since the earlier models had 16" and the laters were fitted with 15" I've been thinking of putting 16" back on just to give it that old fashion look. Did you have any problems? benefits? Know anybody that sells plain old steel 16" that fit patrols. Would love the input, Thanks Frank

I did the opposite, from 16" to 15". At the end, what really matters is the outside tire diameter, and you can get the same results with both rim sizes. You'll find a lot more tire alternatives for 15" rims, and that translates in lower prices also. I will try to avoid the split rims, because you must use an inner tube with them, and when they puncture, they deflate almost instantly. Esteban

You can also get additional information in the Message Board, in General: Wheels and Tires. There is this excelent posting by Fud, in 9/14/2003 that I've coppied to save you some time: "9.5" is the widest you will fit with uncut rear fenders...anything wider will rub in the rear on the fenders when suspension compressed. A 32" tire fits nicely hiegth wise and gives you about 1"-1/2" of clearance on the rear fenders when suspension compressed. This is assuming you have good suspension that is not flat, I have new rear stock leafs and re-arched fronts on my 64. Mounted to a 16" rim a 32" tire may rub ever so slightly on the front. The Patrol had a one piece 16" rim up to about 1966 then changed to a 15" split rim...no idea why as the 16" way better. A Toyo Tundra 16" steel rim will fit on a Patrol nicely. The perfect fit on a Patrol with stock suspension is a 8.25x16" tire but this is a very hard size to find. The height is calculated this way.....8.25x2 (sidewall heigth) = 16.5"+16" rim = 32.5" tire. I have two sets of 7.50x16 on stock 16" early rims and they fit well with no rubbing. This was the optional tire size back in the day, standard was a 6.00x16 or 6.50x16 and all that changed in 66 to 6.00x15 or 6.50x15 with the 7.50x15 being the optional."
