Need Starter Help for 1969 KL60 Patrol

Greetings and Nods to everyone..Awesome site..I am the lucky owner of a farm rescued 69 Hardtop Patrol.But I am like a fish out of water with them. Been raised on toyota's.Today I drained all the fluids and replaced them and changed the spark plugs out.Had it running 3 different times which is a first in 8 years I am told.Now my starter is clicking....Any advice on what I can do???Havent tried the hand crank yet, only because I had no idea what I was doing..Please forgive my ignorance..What's the next step for a newbie in my position.After about 5 hours of searchin on the net , I havent found a starter. Which ones are compatable with the patrols?Thanks,Jimmyroadtrippin@comcast.net

Wow, you found a Patrol that still has the hand crank! Cool... I just had the same thing happen on my '69 Patrol. Had to swap out the starter. There are no compatible starters, only a Patrol starter will work. It's very possible that a auto electrical shop can rebuild it for you, you might try that. Might start with a place like NAPA and see who they might recommend to rebuild an old starter. If that doesn't work, someone on this site probably has an old one laying around somewhere. One hint: might be unique to my Patrol because someone worked on the exhaust at one time, but I had to drop the front drive shaft to get the starter out of the truck because the exhaust was in the way.

Thanks for the Advice.I downloaded the complete Service Manual and it has provided endless amounts of information.My girlfriend and her 2 kids are so excited about having this Patrol. It will definetly be a family project to work on..I found out that it is a Hitachi S114-23.I am planning on pulling it Monday morning and taking it in to a local shop in town to see if they can rebuild it.DAMN.. I have way to many vehicles right now... But this Patrol Is the one that has me the most interested.

There is a place in town here that rebuilds starters and alternators. They rebuilt my starter for $20. You might ask a parts store clerk or two if there are any places around there that rebuilds starters or alternators. The parts found in a Patrol starter are common. Just like any other starter, cept the case and stuff are different.

congrats on your Patrol. This will probably sound niave and maybe even a tad insulting but take it in the spirit of a kindred Patrol owner. The clicking you describe sounds a lot like a low battery causing the solenoid to clatter the bendix rather than engage it into the flywheel teeth. Is it possible that your charging system isn't working after so many years and that the first three times you had it running drained the battery? I find the Patrol starter system is more sensitive to this than most and it happens suddenly - even when there is still enough juice to turn on the lights etc.. Just a thought but charging or jumping before you move to the rebuild option.

Thats a good point Vike-always eliminate the simple and cheap first. I've found that even with a charged battery the long positive cable and ground may need replacing if they are old-good luck and welcome aboard!
