RARE! 1967 Nissan Patrol running project 4x4 - $3600 Las Veg

Post by RiverPatrol »

This is member nefariouscam's Patrol. I'm kinda glad to see that he appreciates it enough that he would rather sell it than "turn it in to a trail truck." :handgestures-thumbupright:

RARE! 1967 Nissan Patrol running project 4x4 - $3600 (North Vegas) NV

This is a 1967 Nissan Patrol. How rare is it? Only 2500 were imported in to the US between 1960 and 1970. They are however very popular in the UK, Australia and South America. Parts are still available for these vehicles.

She sat for a year or so before I bought her. After a new battery, belt, scrounging a water pump and some fresh gas, this truck runs like a sewing machine. I have the fuel line bypassed in to a gas can. My plan was to have the tank vatted, but haven't got around to it.

The truck is all original and too nice for me to turn in to a trail truck. Included are the rear upper ambulance doors. Three pieces of glass are in bad shape or missing, but I have the contact number for a patrol owner who would sell those pieces, the rear seats and tail light bezel for $300.

Lien free Nevada title. Comes with original hand crank to start the engine if the battery dies as well as an original Nissan factory service manual.

This is a running project. With a little TLC it will be road worthy. It needs new tires and some seat covers. Seat belts were optional back then, but I'd put them in. Floors are solid. Top is just surface rust. Paint is original. Missing one window crank and the driver rear quarter panel could use some work.

Brakes and hubs work. Interior and exterior are mostly complete. Come buy a very cool classic 4x4.

I agree Esteban, it is always interesting to see what someone creates.

In working with Jim Allen recently for the article he wrote in Off-Road Adventures a rather poignant revelation occurred to me. Jim is trying very hard to find a Patrol near him in NW Ohio that he can use as the subject of an in-depth article on the Patrol. I brought to Jim's attention member fireballjw's Patrol that is currently listed on craigslist (http://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2022 ). Jim did not use this Patrol because it wasn't original enough. Now I have a reputation for being an anal purist :o but I have learned to be more tolerant in my old age. The revelation though is this: of the Patrols that I/we are aware of in the entire US, only a very small handful of them are an example of a stock, original Patrol. This saddens me, really. I understand that they change hands several times, that parts are challenging to find, that people buy a cheap vehicle and don't want to put a lot of money into it, that everyone is entitled to do what they want to do to their own vehicle. But it is a blaring indication of the fact that the Patrol is a dying breed. In the classic car market, i.e. Barrett-Jackson, original is the most sought after and valuable. Sure, customs will often command big bucks, that's what keeps custom shops in business. A true classic car enthusiast wants and appreciates an original vehicle, just as a true restoration brings a vehicle back to it's original off-the-production-line condition. Safety mods and 'modernizations' are acceptable to an extent of course. You can only hope that there are enough anal purists owning any type of rare vehicle to keep alive enough examples of the real deal. Alright, I step off my soapbox now... :angry-soapbox:

We could start a never ending topic on whether to modify or not, to keep it original to the dot, or not... If you try to make everything as originally as possible, you might end up like a friend, with a showroom condition 240Z, that once, he scouted the whole US just to find the original spare tires, 5 of them in fact, so even the rubber will be true to his car...including some of the air that was still inside... His is a show car that even made it to the Hershey Exhibit of The Sport Car in America a few years ago. It's a passion for some. Not for me, mostly because I don't have the money. I want to enjoy a vehicle, driving it, using it as much as time and conditions allow. Once you end up with a car like the one I mention, it just becomes an art piece. And after that, is just caring for it to maintain that condition. Driving it? Not so much, except when unloading from the trailer.

I should start my own Patrol thread by now...

But in this line of thinking, mine is not in its original condition, and probably left that stage some 30 years ago little by little. When one's car is a daily driver for so long, you're constantly thinking on ways to improve some things, like adding a radio, or fitting more comfy seats, or adapting an oil filter base that will make your life easier every 6 weeks, or stopping with less effort. It becomes a work in progress. It becomes your lab and has your soul inside.

All very true. Yet your Patrol is one that I consider as a good representation of stock. Yours is not a restoration, it is an original that is used very frequently. So the upgrades that you mention, which you very tastefully did, are all within consideration.

I have a friend with a 510 that is restored with the same rigor that you state your friend's 240Z is, original tires and all. He does drive it occasionally, just to keep things lubricated. He is also restoring a 510 wagon that was his fathers. This is a true 'labor of love'. It is still just a painted shell and he's been working on it for over 10 years. He has moved it twice when he bought new houses. This car will definitely be better than off-the-production-line, if he ever finishes it.

If I may chime in; I have a 240Z that was "restored" four years ago. I have owned the car since 1986, acquiring NOS and NLA parts for over 23 years to make it as original as possible. (Having 5 original tires is an accomplishment; I keep buying them and have at least 10 in attic storage.)
Over the years I have been introduced to many Datsun/Nissan enthusiasts, dealer parts managers, auto dealership parts liquidators, part importers, oem component manufacturers, and vintage parts dealers. The connections I have made and the swapping of parts with other people gave me the confidence to rebuild a 1966 Datsun PL520. (Another low production, often neglected vehicle.)
That project led me to the Patrol. I had never seen a Patrol in person, just pictures on the internet. I found several forums and websites that cater to Patrol owners, so I took the plunge and bought one (based on a grainy photo), sight unseen.
My plan is to rebuild the Patrol close to original, to make it functional and aesthetically pleasing. Having the knowledge of rebuilding the 240Z and PL520 (both designed and built during the L60 production run) allows me to see the commonality across platforms. I share my knowledge freely, and trade parts as opportunity allows. Hopefully, as more people acquire neglected Patrols and get them back on the road, the forgotten Datsuns/Nissans of the 1960 will be fondly remembered.

Hey guys and gals. Yep, it is my truck. I decided it is too rare to build the way I need an off road vehicle to be built. In fact, I'm building a tube chassis Jeep based race car right now instead of molesting this classic.

Believe it or not, the motor in that truck runs like a top. I've let it run for 20 minutes and it doesn't smoke, leak, or run hot. I have not driven it because I don't trust the tires. Brakes work.

I don't think your price is out of line. Sometimes they don't sell real fast though.
