Re: Brake switch on master cylinder
Yeah, piece of cake. Have you verified that you are getting power to the switch?

Yes, but it only dims the rear lights, they stay on all the time. when you press on the brake pedal it just stays dim. The one from the 68 cj6 works?

Re: Brake switch on master cylinder
That sounds more like you have debris in the master cylinder clogging the brake switch, or the shims between the master cylinder and the fire wall are missing. Do the lights go out if you pull up on the brake pedal?
I don't know if the cj6 switch will work or not, but you can get the original on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Nissan-Patr ... 53eec37614

Re: Brake switch on master cylinder
It sounds to me like the switch is working, and you have another issue with a short. First you need to get a volt meter or test light and check for voltage at the switch. Brake pedal up one side of switch should have battery voltage, pedal down both sides should have voltage. If that checks ok, the switch is good. I think you have a bad bulb, or socket at the rear lights causing a short, or someone has rewired this wrong. Hope this helps, let me know. By the way i used a jeep switch on mine and it works fine.Socal66 wrote:Yes, but it only dims the rear lights, they stay on all the time. when you press on the brake pedal it just stays dim. Re: Brake switch on master cylinder
Also remember that in Patrols, the wiring to the rear brake lights is routed through the turn signal also. So a good contact cleaner inside will help for starters.
To rule out the switch, I'll disconnect the two cables at the switch, and see what happens with the lights. Then use a jumper cable between the disconnected wires, and see if the lights come.
Good luck.

Re: Brake switch on master cylinder
Ok I jumpered the 2 wires and the lights came on and the shims are there. I recently rebuilt the master cylinder and it was clean. So I'm down to checking the wiring from the turn switch, only because I replaced it a couple of months ago. If that checks ok I'm going with a new brake switch. Thanks for all the help and I'll keep you posted
