Firstly,How i got to meet Neil was a couple of years ago when i was dumping a load of rubbish at the tip, i got talking to the tip master as he helped me unload the trailer. We Spent a good half hour talking about old classic/Vintage cars and i decided to ask him did he know of any early old Nissan Patrols. He preceded to tell me about a bloke who lives just down the road from him, and he was certain he had one of these old G60 Patrols as all the questions i asked seemed to tick the boxes that describe a g60.
So after finding out where Neil lived i decided to go for a bit of drive one afternoon. When i arrived to the Gate on Neil's property and noticed the "Private Property" Sign i decided i best not go any further. So i Grabbed a Bit of paper from the glove box and jotted down a bit of a story asking if he had a G60 Patrol and so forth.
It was a few days later when i got a call, it was Neil on the phone, and he proceeded to mention he did have a G60, and he was kind enough to invite me out to have a look and put a name to a face.
So that weekend i drove out to Neil's place, it was then i worked out he had 2 G60 as i Passed a Rolled SWB G60 while going down the driveway, and noticed another g60 Ute parked in the shed. We spent the best part of a day meeting Neil and chatting and talking G60 when his very nice wife Sylvia invited us to the house for Lunch, geese i only expected to come out and look at the g6, i had no idea Sylvia had cooked up a Delicious feed for lunch.
Later that arvo, Neil decided to give up a Demo of his Trick invention, The Tractor pack welder and a saw bench for a mill which is driven by a series of belts of the back wheel of the old G60 Ute
The Setup Neil reckons is good enough to weld 99% of things.The set up is achieved by getting the g60 Rear wheel aligned to the pulleys on the Shafts of the welder and Saw Blade. With the G60's rear wheel aligned it time to get the wheel off the ground to allow it to spin freely and have no traction on the ground, Raising the wheel consist of a Huge Block and Tackle chained to a log as part of the roof. Its then time to put timber blocks under the spring perch to keep it based firm. When a load come on the G60 when the welder arc's the G60 shakes ad wobbles about, to secure the g60 is a Winch and a series of Chain bolted to a Post in the shed.
Neil's theory is that this set up could never be achieved by running it from a Standard plug in power point and there is no welder that size out there that's a big as this one. Another bonus Neil mentioned is The buckets of torque the g60 produces is easily suited to power this such set up. He does also agree it drinks its share of fuel.
Since i met Neil, we have stayed in contact, and i have been visiting Neil and Sylvia ever since on a monthly basis, and the good all call on the phone to say G'day.
Neil's has also offered me up on any parts i want i can help my self to, what a Top bloke and not many people will offer you free parts the first time you meet them.

Here is the beast a 1976 G60 MWB all original except the Custom Ute conversion and fiberglass Tray,the beefy bulbar that's ploughed down a few trees, i think the bonnet is the only straight panel left
To keep the Welder Running, the engine needs to keep running, so a Holley 350 Carburetor Neil took from his Rolled G60 takes the job of Fuelling the engine with the correct amount of fuel and air. The Carby doesn't have a Choke so Neil adds some fuel down the Carby to get it started. Back a few weeks ago Neil added a bit to much fuel which saw a fire ignite from the Holley

Since Neil's Original Alternator Burnt out, he replaced it with a Brand new unit, but the New alternator is unregulated so when Neil's got the G60 running it is vital to remember to attach the wire to his custom made regulator which allows the alternator to charge at 20Amps. If you forget to hook up the regulator the alternator will not charge and run the battery down. The positive and negative ports on the dash are for the inverter. Here is Neil's regulator fixed to the dash.
With the size of the welder and the size of the Steel you are welding, you have to adjust the Revs of the G60 to Suit, the thicker the steel the more revs, lighter steel you reduce the revs. Neil usually sets the hand throttle which has had such a workout over time it doesn't always hold, so a Chuck of red gum holds the pedal on.
Here is how the belt are connected up to put the power from the g60 to the welder or saw bench. Neil being an ex-Engineer said he new 'V' Belts would work for this as they always will travel to the highest point (center of the wheel) When you select the Gear you have to release the clutch slowly or it tends to through a belt.
