Distributor issue?

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Distributor issue?

Post by scott1418 »

Just replaced the distributor in my "63 L60 and now have an engine that is missing on one cylinder. Narrowed it to #6 cyl and now have swapped plugs and plug wires and put a light on all plug wires and get good spark from all except good old #6. Is there a possible hipline crack in the cap? It will light the test light for 2 seconds and then no spark for 5 or 6 seconds. So it is acting very random. I thought for sure it would be a bad plug wire but not so....Any ideas from you electrical wizards. Thanks guys and girls(Leslie)

ps the distributor came from New Datsun Parts and is a match

A cracked cap is a possibility, or a bad plug wire. You could check it easily enough by rotating the cap 180 degrees. You would need to reroute the plug wires. Could you post a picture of the distributor up? Then we could verify the plug wires are routed correctly.

Always shorts out on the #6 hole no mater what wire is used so thinking hairline crack on #6. Eliminated the plug wires right away as they were swapped out a couple diff ways...Random spark comes out of the 6 hole only. Ordered a cap kit and will try that next week...Stay tuned It is in the shop so no pics today sorry.

The guy working on it is old school trained and seems to think it is in the cap... I might add it is a brand new distr from New Datsun Parts he eliminated everything else as a problem
Thanks for your input

That's frustrating to pay $320 for a dizzy and have problems but Carl/NewNissanParts will most likely replace it.
As you probably know we have other options for distributors. search pertronix electronic module in a non water-protect distributor.

Update to the distr issue. Got the kit from New Datsun and replaced the cap on the new one that had the #6 problem. All is well and running better than ever. So smooth I can't hear it idling…….

New Datsun sells a distr. kit w/ points, rotor cap and condenser for about $40. So I have a few spares….The new distr was $320 and I will write to the supplier and see what they say.

What 'm asking is Did the Distributor on the new datsun site come with the cap, roter etc. It looks as if it would on the site.

IrishPatrol, if you're looking for a new distributor, that one is an aftermarket. There are other alternatives at a more convenient price.
