**WARNING** motorpowerinc P-40 engine rebuild kit

Post by npca-grant »

Hey Gang!   Well, I guess Im the 1st one to have his engine *completly* rebuild using the motorpowerinc rebuild kit, i.e.   http://www.motorpowerinc.com/pricing/p40.html   Reason I say that is I have found that there are allot of differences between the 1960-1960 "P" engine used in the PATROLS and the later "P-40" engine used in NISSAN forklifts. Here is a list of the parts in the motorpowerinc P-40 rebuild kit that WILL NOT WORK on the PATROLS P engine:   LIFTERS VALVE GUIDES MAIN BEARING SET FREEZE PLUG KIT CAMSHAFT GEAR CRANKSHAFT GEAR VALVE SPRINGS (NOT AVAL) CAM PLUG (NOT PART OF KIT, but you will need one)   Keep in mind that Im not done yet, this is just the list to date. Good news is most of these parts you can still git from NISSAN, bad news is they cost alot more! For example the MAIN BEARINGS I ordered today from a parts house (not nissan) cost me $200.00. In the end I will write up all the things I learned on this rebuild and post it here for all to read. In short it all starts to add up quick, so if you have done a pricing on parts, hold off, it is going to cost you alot more then you expected if you used the motorpowerinc as a ref.   Grant

**WARNING** motorpowerinc P-40 engine rebuild kit

Post by npca-jerry-n.w »

Hi' Grant I just looked through the Patrol manul and it shows the main journals sizes of 2.7283 to 2.27273  the same as motor power kit excep journal #1 smaller. There are 7 journals. The valve stem  diameters are also the same as the motor kit.  Did thay send you the right bearings and guides? I thought others had used this kit and every thing worked ecept lifers and cam. Any one els have this problem ....page 37 and 38 patrol manul for specks. ..Would like to know Thanks jerry

>>I just looked through the Patrol manul and it shows the main >>journals sizes of 2.7283 to 2.27273  the same as motor power >>kit excep journal #1 smaller. There are 7 journals.   Not sure about the size, dont have my book with me at the moment. Thing is/was is the crank is the same, thus the size Im sure is the same, but the point/side where the bearing fit into the block are different. Not sure of the tech term for it, but the orginals were much thicker at the ends of the bearings (thrust end?). The guy building my engine looked them up and found that the bearings are different for the "P" vs "P-40". I listed the correct bearings to get in the COMPATABLE PARTS section here.   >>The valve stem diameters are also the same as the motor kit.   The valve stem diameters (OD) are right, and the corsponding valive guide ID is right on, but the valive guide OD that goes into the head itself is smaller.   >>Did thay send you the right bearings and guides?   Depends, they are right for a P-40 but wrong for a P.   >>I thought others had used this kit and every thing worked >>ecept lifers and cam.   I thought I had read that too, which is why I said/asked if Im the first to do a complete rebuild. In that alot of times folks dont do the bottom end, and when they do a top end (valve job) they sometimes just sleve the valve guides. Thus they would not have run into the problems I have.   >>Any one els have this problem ....page 37 and 38 patrol >>manul for specks. ..Would like to know Thanks jerry   Which manual? The NISSAN "P" engine manual I uploaded, or is there a PATROL manual I dont have? Eitherway, Ill write up everything I leared on this when it is done and upload it to the club, so others dont have to go through this.   Grant

I ordered the valve guides from MotorPowerInc and the place that did the head work for me said they fit fine. Since my engine is running good, I would agree. I'm not sure on the rest of the hardware you mention because I didn't need those parts.David

Since my engine is >>running good, I would agree.   Well, I guess you have better luck than I then. Because mine were defintally too small OD wise. Did you keep your old guides? I would like to know what they mic at. If not, are you sure they replaced them?   >>I'm not sure on the rest of the hardware you mention because >>I didn't need those parts.   Yup... your luck is better then mine! ;)   Grant

Well... This list goes on, found out today that the front seal is wrong too, not to mention the majority of the gaskets. Good thing is the important gaskets are ok (ie head) but most of the rest are not. Ill do a complet write up of what worked, what didnt, and what I used in it's place when all is said and done. In short, my trip from Las Cruces to Los Angles will be delayed a few weeks. Note, I check with www.motorpowerinc.com with regards to the valve guides and such, they said that these are the ones they have been using for 10 years, thus they made a mistake when they filled my order, or, this is what they have on the shelfs now. Basically... if your planning a re-build soon, I sugest you wait and read my report Ill write up. It will save you DAYS of delay! Not to mention $$$. Take care and have a great holiday!   Grant

Grant,   I found a site that lists the different gaskets between the "P" and the "P40" engines. Check out:   http://www.tonghong.com/thnis2.htm   Maybe this guy can save us a few bucks.   David

Grant,      I have a 1969 L60 w/eng# P63105 in need of a rebuild.  I also looked at the Motorpowerinc. rebuild kits, and well as the EPS (Engine Power Source) kits, and was worried about was has happened to you.  Judging by the list of bad parts, I'm assuming that you bought the Complete Kit.  Do you reccommend buying the Basic Kit, and just looking elsewhere for the rest?  What other bad parts have you found from that kit, and have you found any good ones somewhere else?   Chris   P.S. I am new member, it's really great to know this website exists.  Until two weeks ago, I thought the Patrol we've had in my family since 1975 was the extinct and a lost cause.

>>Judging by the list of bad parts, I'm assuming that >>you bought the Complete Kit.   Correct.   >>Do you reccommend buying the Basic Kit, and >>just looking elsewhere for the rest?   No, not even the basic kit. Espically if the main bearings are part of that kit. In that the "P-40" main bearings will not work with the "P". Other things too, in short alot of them will work, alot wont. So, dont buy any of the kits, just buy the parts that will work, because the price cant bee beat.   >>What other bad parts have you found from that kit,   I dont have the list in front of me at the moment, just moved, alot of stuff still in boxes. How soon you planning to do this?   >>and have you found any good ones somewhere else?   Off the top of my head, the only things I could not find *new* were the valve springs, cam gear, main gear, distributer. Thank god they were all in great shape and could be reused! I think I may have got the last of the valve guides from NISSAN. In that I ordered extra, and they have been on back order for 3 months. And I never recived any valve springs from NISSAN.   Check out this sights Compattible Parts section at:   http://communities.msn.com/NissanPatrol ... parts.msnw   There I lised the main bearings I used, and the freeze plugs.   And, if you plan on doing all the work yourself, *or* at least plan on pulling the motor out and having someone else rebuild it for you, then you putting it back in then skip the following message. Other wise read it... and know one thing... or learn one thing from me.... If you are going to have all the work done by somene else, find a shop that can pull the engine, rebuild it, and put it back in!!! Do not take it to a place that rebuilds motors, but has someone else pull it and put it back in.   http://communities.msn.com/NissanPatrol ... 0200698251   Grant
