Neils 1976 G60's

Post by G60michael »

Hi Guys, well its been a while in the making to get a post up about the 3 old nissan g60's my mate owns.
Starting off, Neil purchased an old g60 to use as a farm truck several years ago. Neil noticed the old g60 parked on the side of the road one day heading to work, with a for sale sign in the window, so Neil decided to find out somemore information about the old g60 and brought the old beast for $1800.
After 12 Years of work on the property pussing down trees, making its way through tough and ruggered terrain neil decided it was time to retire the old 1976 SWB G60 Patrol.
The Engine neil mentioned was a absoulte pearler, and was previously rebuilt prior to neil purchasing it. The chassis however had very sever rust throughout it, holes, and whole sections just rusted out, and with the rusty and crumply body on it, it was sure to say this old G60 had seen the beach a time or two.
The old g60 is now resting in the paddock under a tree, where it awaits it next visit for me or neil to raid a part from it. Its still rusting away but the old g60 has got alot of goodies on it still like WARN Locking Hubs, good diffs, transmission and transfer as well as a few interiour parts, and a aliminium fuel tank.

Here is the g60 that replaced the old 76 SWB. It is a 1976 G60 MWB all original except the Custom Ute conversion and fiberglass Tray, the beefy bulbar that's ploughed down a few trees, i think the bonnet is the only straight panel left :) Neil picked this up for $1500 as its previous owner tried to get it registered with the home made roof conversion, which didnt meet the specifications.

To keep the Welder Running, the engine needs to keep running, so a Holley 350 Carburetor Neil took from his Rolled G60 takes the job of Fuelling the engine with the correct amount of fuel and air. The Carby doesn't have a Choke so Neil adds some fuel down the Carby to get it started. Back a few weeks ago Neil added a bit to much fuel which saw a fire ignite from the Holley  Image

Another shot of the G60 engine bay, it doesn't show up much in the pics but the engine bay is mostly coved in oil spray, check out the awesome Paint work on the block, i mean, umm Oil

Since Neil's Original Alternator Burnt out, he replaced it with a Brand new unit, but the New alternator is unregulated so when Neil's got the G60 running it is vital to remember to attach the wire to his custom made regulator which allows the alternator to charge at 20Amps. If you forget to hook up the regulator the alternator will not charge and run the battery down. The positive and negative ports on the dash are for the inverter. Here is Neil's regulator fixed to the dash.Image

With the size of the welder and the size of the Steel you are welding, you have to adjust the Revs of the G60 to Suit, the thicker the steel the more revs, lighter steel you reduce the revs. Neil usually sets the hand throttle which has had such a workout over time it doesn't always hold, so a Chuck of red gum holds the pedal on.Image

Here is how the belt are connected up to put the power from the g60 to the welder or saw bench. Neil being an ex-Engineer said he new 'V' Belts would work for this as they always will travel to the highest point (center of the wheel) When you select the Gear you have to release the clutch slowly or it tends to through a belt. And this is the latest g60 to neil's fleet, yep another 1976 G60 Patrol MWB
When i Picked up my 1972 G60 from a farm clearing sale, I was told about another g60 not far from where i picked up the 72 from. I mentioned to Neil that i knew of another g60, and it turns out he knows the owner of the property which the g60 was on.
Neil headed out there one day to check it out, and decided his 76 custom ute is to good just to be running the sawmill and welder and that he should just get this g60 to run it instead, freeing up the g60 ute for perminate farm duties.
On tuesday we headed off to retrieve the old g60. It had been parked in the same spot for the last 10 odd years, packed literally 3/4 full of leaves, stick vegetation and what ever else may have been in it. We knew we were not ablt to get the old g60 on a trailer in the area it was parked, so we unhtched the trailer and headed up to the g60. We placed a piece of thick walled steel pipe with a chain through it from the g60 to the tow vehicle which made a safe and easy way of removing the g60 from the hill.
On Wednesday i headed out to neils to see if we could get the old machine going. We had a few spark issues with the dizzy, but again the old 76 SWB Wreck came in handy donatign a dizzy to its bigger brother the new 76 MWB.
We sprayed some lubricant inside the bores, to lubircate it up, about 15 revolutions with the crank and refitted the sparkplugs, redone the timing after fitting the dizzy. The starter wasnt throwing in so we hooked up neils triton and headed up the driveway with neil steering the new g60 keen to get it pull started, as the starter wasnt throwing in. A few days later, we took of the starter and lubricated it right up with some WD40 type penetrating spray, hooked up a broken wire and away it went.

Unusual feature to see on a 70's g60 , is that someone has fitted a VC42 Carburettor, Its such a better carby than the previous VHA it would of been fitted with, no flat spots and picks up straight away. Another unusual feature is that it was fitted with a 60's Dizzy aswell.
Image
The engine is clean as a whistle, and no knocks or nasty noises, apparently is was done up and only driven a handfull of times before if was parked up, i reckon its probably true as this engine is one of the smoothest ive ever herd, and has plenty of go aswell.
Image
Its fitted with one of the ractory rear hooks which are proving hard to find now, Neil will need to use this hook to secure the g60 while its running the welder or sawmill.
Image
Another one which was a Candidate for the Selectro Hubs

Today we Decided to make up a bull bar, its not steel but its good enough for what neil need, he will always install a steel one if need be. This whole bumper was made from scrap steel lying about, and best of all we used the 76 ute to weld it all up.
Image

Its even got the full lenght exhaust system which is ultra rare to see on any old patrol these days.

All finished on the bar now, Also we made a custom tow bar tounge from scrap as well

Thanks for taking the time and effort to put together this history of Neil's Patrols. It's nice to have a friend nearby that is a Patrol fan also. :D The homemade bulbar turned out nice. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
