Hi there Leslie,

Sounds Like it cold be one of a few possible problems.

Talking from experience with a couple of my g60's and the Red 76 of Neil's, the Rubber Fuel line is prone to fatiguing at the rear where it comes out of the tank from old age ect. One day its running fine, the next day it is cut open, hence it is sucking air not the fuel and cannot pump through Petrol.

How Long Ago did you swap the new Filter over, I have fitted filters overtime and they do catch the majority of the stuff but it depends where in the line you run the filter(s) . Another issue is from the Pump - Carburetor overtime i have found out crap builds up in there and then eventually build up enough to completely block the flow, if it doesn't complete block the flow it would be quiet restricted.

Cheers Mike

It did occur to me that it might be sucking air from a cracked line. I had replaced all of the rubber fuel line recently because it was cracked. I thought that the feed line from the fuel tank was metal - it is on all of my other Patrols. So I haven't checked there but it's a good thought.

I haven't tinkered with it today because the weather isn't cooperating. I hope to knock the carb with a hammer and hope that the float is just stuck.

You guys were right! A couple taps with a hammer to the float bowl and it started up and stayed running this time. Woohoo! I didn't think of this because normally when the float sticks on a Rochester gas will start pouring out of the carb, not die like this one did. Thanks!

Now, who knows the trick for putting the fuel pump diaphragm back in? I've been fighting this thing for 2 days and can't get the freakin' diaphragm rod to catch on the actuator correctly. I've done it many times in the past but I seem to have lost my touch. :(

Great that you solved the carb problem.

Regarding the diaphragm leg, please note the position that the tab on the rubber needs to end up, since the leg has to go in and then you have to turn 90° so it remains engaged in the rocker arm.

You will have to push all the way in until the leg of the diaphragm touches the bottom of the body.

Sticky ethanol gas perhaps? :(
How long had it been since you ran it? My lawn mower hates the stuff. Fortunately, I have a station right around the corner from work that sells ethanol free gas! :)

that stuff has ruined many weed eaters, lawn mowers, tillers, and injectors on vehicles. what really makes me mad is that in AR they are going higher than the stated 10% Ethanol mix and no one is checking that. you can't eat that gas, and all our food sources for grain or that consume grain is going sky high. I dread to see what the groceries will get up to this year.

ok i feel better now. sorry for the rant.

I was thinking fuel additives might be the culprit. I filled the tank not too long ago and have driven it about 100 miles since then. Last I drove it was about 3 weekend ago, not long enough for me to think the float would stick.

Esteban: I know that I have to turn the diaphragm 90 degrees, the problem is getting the 'T' end of the diaphragm rod past or through the slot in the actuator. And my hands aren't what they used to be, so that's not much help. The picture shows the 'T' and the slot at the end of the actuator ( this from the old diaphragm). And the ridge along the pump body that keeps the 'T' in the slot. I know there's a certain way you have to push down and tilt the diaphragm before you turn it. It the direction of the tilt and at what point of the pushing down that is eluding me.

Okay, never mind. Ya'll can stop wracking your brains, I got it figured out.

The trick is: you must push down and turn to the left, not the right. If you turn to the right you will cuss and swear it is impossible for 2 days. Then, when your hands and wrists are so sore you can't do anything else, you finally turn to the left and it drops right in easy as pie. :D
