67 Patrol semi refurbish

When I bought this this Patrol it didn't look like much. I don't really have the funds to do a complete frame off restoration job, I just really want to tidy everything up so that it can be driven safely out in the desert and also around town without having to duck my head in shame. The left rear quarter panel and rear panel has quite a bit of rust which will need to be cut out and have new sheet metal welded in. There is no front bumper, and the rear bumper has some major damage. The windshield is majorly cracked and is held together with packing tape so that will need to be replaced at some point. The paint is 3 different colors and the body mounts are either rotted out so bad that there is carpet like fibers coming out, or they used like conveyor belt rubber to make body mounts, I'm not quite sure.

Anyway, I'm going to document my work on here for your amusement.

Got the front bumper welded together today and tacked on. It's been a while since I welded anything so the welds arent as purrrty as I'd like them but they hold. I guess thats what a handy dandy grinder is for. Just made a simple utilitarian bumper. Most people add brush guards for protection. Most people would say it is to protect the headlights. Forget the headlights, my biggest fear is being out in the desert and having something punch a hole in my radiator and have to hoof it back to town. At least this will help deflect something coming towards the grille/radiator. I may add on to it down the road but at least now it has something on there.

Also started sanding down the old paint. Top coat is white, then underneath is like a burnt orange, then rust, then bare metal. This is going to take a while....

I forgot, I picked up the Top from "Chucks67"s warehouse yesterday. It needs a ton of work but i'm not even going to think about that right now!

Sounds like you've got a good plan. Nice work on the front bumper already. The primer used on the Patrols was a rust colored reddish color, that's probably what you are seeing under the white paint.

The passenger side inner panels have the reddish paint, the driver side inner panels do not have the reddish paint.. Its weird

Worked long and hard on getting that rust on the rear panel cut out. It was a lot worse than I thought. I ended up having to cut out all of the inner substructure where the spare tire bolts onto because it was just so rotted out.

I welded in some angle iron to start some bracketry to be able to bolt

Got the sheet metal shaped and cut. I lined the edge of where it needed to be placed with grease and laid it where it needed to be, leaving a grease tracing of where it needed to be cut. Next i took it to the bandsaw and followed the tracing.

Next it is just a matter of placing it on there and welding it up!

Nice job! See, not so big a deal. I like the way you replaced the reinforcement in there.

Also got a new windshield installed. I didn't feel like messing with that myself so I called a glass guy. I just took the whole windshield frame off and gave it to my glass guy.m

Brought it back the next day with a new windshield. He even replaced the gasket! It is a little different than the old one but hey, the windshield is in and it is nice and secure!

After taking a small break from working on the Patrol I finally got the new sheet metal welded in place of the rotted out rear panel. Got the mud on there and now i just need to sand it down and smooth it out.

Also, this Patrol is missing all of the door panel inserts. Lucky for me I have a quarter million dollar water jet at my disposal

I cut up some templates yesterday and will draw them up on CAD tomorrow. Once I have them on CAD the hard part is done, so if anyone needs door panel inserts I can cut them for you in whatever material you want from balsa wood to steel

I might cut them out of a few different materials to "try them on" so to speak. I am kind of thinking a nice stained wood or something... we'll see..
