67 Patrol in the family since new

Post by Drews67 »

Hey everyone, I've been following online since it was the Nissan Patrol Club Albuquerque and now that life has settled I am finally ready to move forward on my project.

I have a 67 patrol that was originally a soft top, but the man that raised my grandfather ordered a solid top for it about a year after he bought it. He liked the solid top because the rig was used for hunting trips and there were times they had 7 full grown men in hunting gear inside the Patrol, a couple deer strapped across the hood and a few more tied to the roof- I wish I had pictures of that! Unfortunately the soft top frame was misplaced years ago.

When he passed away, my grandfather inherited the Patrol and it was a daily driver for their family. My dad learned to drive in it and drove it through high school and college. Eventually the patrol had a transmission issue and was parked. It sat for about 10 years before grandpa took it to a shop and had it rebuilt so he could use the patrol to tow and launch his big jet boat.

My grandpa knew that I was fascinated with the patrol and he gave it to me on my 16th birthday. His only stipulation was that I couldn't sell it until after he died. He said I could do whatever I wanted mechanically, paint etc... but even if I totaled the Patrol and it was just a pile of metal, I had to tow it home and leave it there as long as grandpa was alive.

It was my daily driver for about 7 years. During that time I had to replace the fuel pump (paid way too much but got a New Old Stock pump from Australia), carburetor rebuild and miscellaneous other things. About the time I was finishing college, the Patrol was starting to have some brake and clutch issues. The final straw was the generator went out and so the Patrol got parked for its second time. It has not been on the road since 2005, but my grandfather is getting older and I am determined to get this things back on the road for him to drive before he passes.

I don't have a ton of money and there are a few things that must be addressed. The brakes, generator and clutch are the biggest items on my list right now. I just moved so I can't find my camera, but will get pictures posted by the end of the week. I am going to need a lot of help, but everybody on here seems to be very excited about getting more Patrols back on the road. The patrol is currently stock except for the PTO winch is not on it (it is somewhere in grandpas garage), I removed the side steps (I have them if someone wants), different rims, Jeep hood latches, and there was a modification to the heater/defrost motor.

The patrol has been right here in the Tri-Cities, Washington since new- with two stints at EWU in Cheney where my dad attended and then I also attended.

Anyone else in the Tri-Cities or close please hit me up I would love to get together and see another patrol on the road. I've seen a couple at car lots before, but never on the road and in the hands of another enthusiast.

I will have pics up and LOTS of questions on here in the next week.

I'm excited to get my "Ol' Red Rig" back on the road

Welcome to 60Patrol! :text-welcomeconfetti: I'm glad you found your way here by following the Nissan Patrol Club of Albuquerque trail. :D

That's a great story behind your Patrol. We'd definitely love to see you get it back on the road for you grandfather, and for yourself. The generator might just need rebuilding, the brushes are pretty easy to find. Brakes and clutch can be fixed as well. Just let us know what you need and we'll be glad to point you in the right direction.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Your grandpa is already my hero!   4 generations driving this Patrol... priceless!

Welcome!

I'm sure somebody here will have a spare generator, if you want to keep it stock. Otherwise, an alternator is an easy change, with only finding the appropriate pulley the most difficult part. The pulley and the fan belt in the Patrol are 3/4". However, I have successfully used a 5/8" belt. A 5/8" pulley for a "one-wire" GM alternator will be easy to find, and the rest is just preparing the right mounting base.

Regarding the clutch, you can still get a new clutch on ebay.
Clutch Bearing: Napa part # BRG N3075
The clutch cover can be cleaned, dismantled and assembled again. Hope it's not badly scratched.

Brake cylinders can still be sourced or new seals fitted, as well as the flexible rubber hoses.

There's a lot of information posted here, as Keith mentioned.

Good luck!

Hey there Drew. Welcome to the site. Yes there are some Patrols here in the dry cities.... Pasco to be exact. Been here with my patrols since this site was founded. Currently have uhhhh.... several patrols... now up to 6.... have a couple of runners... more like garage queens. We used to live out in Burbank. Someone had stopped by the house one day saying that he had his grandfather's Patrol. Maybe you? I am currently restoring one in the shop. We live right off Road 68. If you know where Diesel Performance is, you can find us. their shop is across the road from us. Another Patrol owner lives outside Yakima on the way to Naches (Irish Patrol). Tony is a great guy. He has a 69 (titled as a 70).

I might take you up on that 50car. I don't intend to get back to stock or retain everything stock that it currently has. Its going to be a weekend driver (I have a company car so it won't be daily) and its going to be my hunting and off road rig.

I was planning to switch to an alternator, convert to negative ground and go to electronic ignition. If you can help guide me through those projects I've got some steps and a generator you can have.
