I hate to toss out this idea, but what about cam timing? If the gear was off one-tooth, the engine sure wouldn't perform well. Thoughts? Is there a way to check this easily?

I considered this possibility as well, but from the videos, the engine just seems to be running too smoothly for this to be the case -- if the cam timing was off, I would expect it to be sputtering, popping, and all sorts of nastiness... Checking it would involve removing the water pump and the front timing cover -

I just watched your video again where you demonstrate the play in the disty... when you wiggle the loose baseplate, can you actually bring the pertronix module into contact with the reluctor (the trigger wheel with the flat faces) on the center shaft ?

If it is loose enough that these components can touch, then I suppose your Pertronix module could have possibly been messed up by the contact.... ?

I agree that it is about the only thing we haven't tested out...

I asked that very question. Dave said it wasn't hitting. But i think there is a problem there with either too much play, or the Pertronix. Usually the modules are either good or bad no inbetween. But this might be the oddball that proves that theory wrong.

I totally agree - usually when an HEI module goes bad, it won't even trigger the coil...

I was just talking to John Faux and he said about the same ideas. I have an extra that needs lotzo work...but hoping the one on the 65 is good enough.
I want to compare the play that center shaft normally makes too.... never enough time.

The gas and filter good but I had wondered about the flow rate actually being 4-7 lbs on a Mr Gasket brand elec fuel pump....it seems to have flow but would have to presure test to know for sure. The other thing is I have not looked to see if there may be a kink in the fuel line or some funkedelic blockage in the pump unit or connections.

Plugs are getting black soot all over them. I doubt its a lean fuel problem.

yeah, Black soot = too much gas, too little spark voltage (coil), or leaky intake valves (which should be ruled out considering the fresh rebuild on Dave's engine)



Dave- next question from me- when you changed the plug wires, it looks from the pics like the cap had a lot of corrosion in it. Was the cap replaced along with the wires?

or at the very least, was the cap soaked in vinegar and scrubbed to get all that corrosion cleaned out? Has the cap been inspected thoroughly for cracks?

After checking all else....I did finally just swap out the distributor from my 65 and then drove it 65 mph. Thanks to ALL you guys telling me to just swap it out and see....it was either the wobble/play in that center cylindrical post and/or the Petronix module is bad. Ill get more info when I pull it apart.
I almost never have a picture perfect ending when fixing cars.....my fault though.....when I changed out the diz and set timing it was dusk....it started and ran so great around the cul de sac that I grabbed the dog and went a few miles and pPfffffft......."we have a problem Houston!"......I neglected to really tighten the base bolts, had only finger tight!
