I thought about the VQ40 also. It has good power. I am not techy enough to crack the ECM. I also considered the VK56. It would be overkill, but an awesome resto mod.XploreNV wrote:Welcome to the forum!
I like the idea of doing a Nissan VQ40DE or VQ35DE with the rest of the power train out of a frontier or xterra. Plenty of power and reliability. You can find those motors on eBay for around 2k, or probably less at a junkyard.... but then again, we're talking about your money... not mine
I have a coworker that just put a VQ35 in his old 240SX. He drove it around his neighborhood for the 1st time last night. It still isn't back together road worthy, but he has the hardest part cracked. He is running UpRev Osiris tuner to write out the sensors and items he doesn't need. While there are no stand alone engine management systems for the VQ40 or 56, he says the the UpRev tuner will do the job. And offord to help me with a VK56 swap. Kind of hard to turn down, but that is wayyyy more project than I want.

Re: Hello from Colorado
That would be a pretty intense swap. I would be willing to bet you could get an SDS system to work.. Either EM-6 or EM-8 depending on which motor you go with. The "F" model ones have the internal ignition coils. They come up on eBay every once in a while and you can send them to SDS in Ontario to update the programming and add on whatever you want. They are a true universal engine management system used in cars boats aircraft etc.mdawg4x4 wrote:I thought about the VQ40 also. It has good power. I am not techy enough to crack the ECM. Re: Hello from Colorado
Hey Chris:
Welcome and thanks for posting pics. I too have a Patrol ('69) and live in Longmont, Colorado.
Mine did not have the original drive train and I'm doing Jeep axles and a Chevy LS-1 engine in mine.
Let me know if you're anywhere near me and if you'd like to connect sometime. Hoping to have mine roadworthy by end of year.
