Please help. Trans synchro slop

My first post since my intro

So my transmission won't shift into 3rd. Pulled the cover and found slop and a beat up synchro or baulk ring

A-what do yall think?
B. How is something like this fixed since baulk rings are discontinued?
C. What causes so much slop? I have yet to open the rear cover.

Wow...

I'm no expert on the Patrol's transmission (2869ral and Esteban will probably be able to provide a better analysis than me) but that much slop seems like a VERY bad output main bearing, bad needle bearings where the two shafts come together, or possibly even a broken main shaft.

Let's see what the guru's of the gearbox have to say when they see this thread...

I think Robert is on the right track. It looks like if the needle bearings are missing which will be odd.

I guess that you don't have any other choice than dismantle the box.

Regarding the synchro rings, either get some used ones, or our friends in Australia might have a way to source them. The other possibility is Colombia.

Output shaft bearing is toast, also looks like needle bearings are bad or missing. With any luck the needle bearings are laying in the bottom of the box and are still good. I suspect the pocket where the needle bearings go is chewed up, lets hope not. Also the rear of the output shaft is supported by 2 bearings, one at the rear of the transmission box "which i can tell is bad" and one at the very end of the shaft in the transfer case, either that bearing is bad or the rear of the outputshaft is broken. If this moved under it own power the shaft isnt broken. You will need to tear it down. Not sure what i have left, but i might be able to help you with some parts. good luck bud and welcome to 60PATROL.

That is going to be perfect.
After reading the first part, I went and checked under the cover of the rear and noticed that the nut was extremely loose.
Don't know if that makes a huge difference with my problem.

This will be my first tear down and rebuild. I hope I am not biting too big of a chunk

So I drained the trans fluid out of the tranny. Nothing laying in the bottom except I look like I struck gold when I stuck my finder through the hole and dug up some sludge and microscopic brass shavings.

A tear down is a must. That write up will be crucial. Thank you
Any help on parts would be incredible. Especially that synchro gear.

BTW, are all the synchros the same? I said that I will be purchasing a parts Patrol and I can prob swap in good parts for bad

There are 2 syncros and they are identical.. with a loose nut you will get front to rear play. Looked like you had a lot of radial play, so that tells me that both rear bearings are bad. I just hope the countershaft and inputshaft bearing races are good.
