rollbar?

I have a 69 KL60 (see Durango Patrol) and also have two little girls, ages 1 and 4. Even though I am the king of my castle, (don't tell my wife I said that), my better half wont let me take the girls out in my Patrol to cruise for chicks, or even to go to the store for a loaf of bread. She rolled her Montero in January, and she tells me that I need to put a rollbar on the Patrol before I can take the kiddos with me. Since my other car is financing Saddam's Republican Guard, (V-10 Ram), a rollbar it must be! Any suggestions out there? Thanks, Steve Stahl Durango, CO

A four wheel drive shop in Fruita Co. said they could custum make one for around $600. Can't remember the name of the place but I could look them up next time I'm in Grand Junction if needed or you could just go to a fab shop and see what they'd charge. Good luck. Jim

I had the same concerns. There are plenty of Toyota Landcruisers in the wrecking yards - at least here in British Columbia. Most have roll bars. I bought one for $100. It was 2" too wide so I cut out that amount from the cross tube, inserted a 2' tightly-fitting section of heavy wall pipe 12" into one side, tack welded that, slid the other half of the roll bar in place, and arc welded the new joint circumference. It worked perfectly with minimal expense. My hard top has about 1" to spare for clearance just in front of the main roof support.

Well, I have a stock rollbar for a Patrol. So some of them were either offered with one or you could buy it aftermarket. It is a rarity though. I did manage to use a CJ-7 rollbar in one of my Patrols. It was too short though so I put 6" square blocks under it to lift it up. They were stock steel rectangular tubes weighing about 80 pounds each. They were about 3/4" thick. The 6" was enough to lift the bar to match up perfectly with the hardtop. The CJ-7 rollbars are the correct width and length, just the wrong height. SO if you wanted to simply bolt one in it will be 6 inches shorter than the windshield top, but it will serve the purpose for now.
