Ok guys and gals. As per the title i am having some thoughts regarding the above.....they are just thoughts atm but given the uniqueness of the g60 engine bay the SC provides some very interesting benefits over turboes given the limited amount both space and heat sheilding.....

now this is in relation to both the p motor and in particular the sd33t.......bear with me

my patrol "hermit" will be getting her sd33t dropped in shortly- i have the steel tray for the triton now almost done and with it comes a crane so i can lift thing like motors etc.....

now there is a few issues with dropping an sd33t into the g60: the turbo position from factory is very average in clearance of both the starter motor, and the passenger side footwell itself and the body mount.......drivers side for you yanks :D .
Now its possible to relocate the turbo with a lot of custom fab work, but you still end up with a great big lump of super hot steel in the engine bay, and that heat will get thrown into the cab under your feet.....not so fun on a 40 degree day in an ausie summer.....the turbo also increases intake air temps and the motors running temp- exhaust gas temps being kept low is noted as critical for a healthy sd33t- they do not like heat, and the g60 engine bay as a very good heat trap.

now a mate of mine has an sc14 super charger- think they are off toyotas or holdens? Anyways, this one already has a 12 psi pulley fitted to it. Its been offered to me for a rediculously fair price........though currenty im still too broke to do anything more than seriously consider the idea.....

If i was to fit this to the sd33t it would solve all the heat/space/clearance issues in 1 blow. It allow a reasonable exhaust to actually be fitted up without nearly as much expensive fab work from the local exhaust shop, and it gives a few more options for a custom intake manifold which doesnt starve cyl 1 and 6 of air like the factory set up does.
12psi is reasonable for the stock sd33t, and having no turbo lag means instant torque available from idle- given this ute will be primarily used for firwood hauling and towing a car trailer i think the "no lag" is a huge positive, as is the massive decrease in heat.
Down sides are the need for custom pulleys, possible belt slippage, and more load on the crank- such as it would be. Plus more things to go wrong..... dont look too hard at my track reccord with turboes though, my nickname isnt murphy for nothing.

Now my next line of thought is along the lines of the p motor being a very low comp motor- i have a rebuilt one sitting here which has around 600km on it before being parked up. With the low factory comp ratio the p motor would be very suitable for supercharging would it not?? Im assuming the ignition system can be made to handle it?, and ditto the carb- obviously i would be looking at something like a blow through type set up? ........i really am out of my depth when talking super chargers and carbys..... :think:

I have had two trucks with superchargers. One was my 04 Tacoma, in addition to the s/c it had a 7th injector, headers, bigger fuel pump, nice free flow exhaust, small pulley and a special ECU for the fuel system. These mods easily gave the truck 75+ hp. Drove that truck set up like this for over 60,000 miles.

The SD33T for my 83 is both turboed and s/c'ed. Supercharger gives boost off the line with zero lag. When the turbo kicks in the boost together. It is such a crazy sound that motor makes, I will post a video in the video section.



Thing about a turbo on a gas motor, fuel system needs to be modified so it doesn't ping at higher rpms. That and you have to run high octane fuel. Heat sink can be an issue. On the Tacoma, sensors in the throttle body failed from heat sink. So I added a TB spacer and it was not an issue anymore.


I think the P engine could take super charging if you keep boost under 15psi. 10psi would be better. Going to take some work to do it. Belt slippage can be an issue but I never experienced it. On the SD33T, it is definately a go. One of the better mods done to the SD33T I have.

Thing is, I don't think the P engine needs much more power, that main issues are in the 3spd trans.

Thanks Ian, i really appreciate the input.
Currently im still trying to get a crane sorted to lift the engines in/out of the patrols. Everything that used to take x amount of time now takes 4x that amount to even do basic stuff.
the supercharger makes a whole lot of sense for the sd33t, especially in the g60s engine bay. Doing away with a whole lot of technical issues wtih clearance of the starter and the turbo, and the exhaust.
The super charger allows fitment of std extractors/headers to take care of the clearance issues, and also allow a bit less back pressure.
From the info i could find there are issues with superchargers chewing belts up though, and also tearing harmonic ballancers off the end of the crank shaft. Also the pulleys used for tensioning seem to self destruct too due to the heat and high rpm they are subjected too. The pulleys and belts themseves i think are easy enough to obtain though.

Piping isnt a big issue, neither is the bracketry needed to position the charger. And it just seems to be the ideal answer to this particular vehicles intended purpose. The no lag torque combined with the 4.6 mq diffs and the marks 4.8 1st gear would mean it would crawl incredibly well and i would not have to use much more than idle for most 4x4ing i do. .. :think:

the p motor was more of a passing thought, and i kinda agree, it doesnt need more power, really just better gearing. The swb i had with the 35s under it had a tired p motor powering it, and it had noissues dragging trailers about the farm even with a combined weight of around 3 tons with the trailer +firewood.

Just gotta stop talking about doing it, and actually go and do it..........
