Mystery fender vents and unusual features

Post by RiverPatrol »

Earlier, Robert pointed out some unusual findings that he discovered in the early parts book that he acquired. Things that make you go 'hmmm...' This is the thread: http://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopic ... 9&start=30 While looking for something else today I found more evidence of some of the unusual features on some early Patrols. I didn't want to hijack his project thread so I've started a new one. This is just some stuff that I can prove exists. There are many more features that have yet to be discovered.

One very interesting point brought up was the shape of the fender vents in some of the pictures in the introduction of the parts book. The vents were not totally rectangular, they had one corner cut off. I did some digging and I can find several more instances of these unusually shaped vents, not only in a parts book picture but also in the early service manual. Here are some examples:

The last picture above is obviously a drawing. I believe that the others are also drawings or renderings - Robert doesn't agree. I think that is the reason for the odd shaped fender vents on some of the pictures. These vents have never actually been seen on any Patrol.

Now, there are some other Patrol features that, while they are extremely rare, they have been seen on Patrols other than being listed in parts books. These features were typically only found on very early Patrols, and I only use North American Patrols as examples.

One rare feature is front sliding windows. These are windows in the front doors that slide side to side. Here is a picture from the service manual showing the door with that type of window. Notice the large opening in the center of the door that is normally covered with the door panel. There is also a notch on the lower edge of the window frame. There is also no window winder. This picture doesn't show the 2 individual pieces of glass.

Here are some pictures of a '63 Patrol that actually has these unusual windows.

left_door_sliding_window.jpg

These are a little different that the picture in the service manual because they don't have the notch in the window frame. As I recall Esteban has a picture of a door that has the notch. Also, notice the the opening on the driver's door in the pictures is shaped differently than the opening on the passenger door; the driver's door is shaped the same as the doors with roll up windows.

It seems that roll up windows were possibly a 'luxury' item. Maybe Datsun went with the roll up windows because everyone liked them better? In this article from a 1962 Four Wheeler magazine, they tout the fact that the Patrol has roll up windows.

The next odd items would go together or accompany each other. This is the drop down tailgate and the side mount spare tire carrier. The tailgate is wider than the normal ambulance doors, so their isn't room for the spare tire carrier latch. So, if the Patrol came with a tailgate it also came with the fixed type side tire carrier. Here are pictures of 2 Patrols with the tailgate. The spare carrier only survived on one of the. The tailgate has been repaired on both of them, apparently they rot out quickly.

I can attest to the existence of the rear cargo mat that matched the floor mats - I have one.

Some parts books show canvas front doors or upper canvas doors. I have not seen any pictures of actual factory canvas doors. Another canvas feature that seems to be illusive is roll up side curtains. These show up in brochures sometimes. I believe that they may have been offered on the G61 Patrols. The soft top was significantly different on the G61.

Okay, so this one isn't a US Patrol, but it's a cool feature. This is a Swiss Patrol truck that has a troop carrier type cover on the bed. Very cool, I think. 8-) You can just barely see the side curtain on the rear.

Anyway, that's all I have. I'm sure there is more, but these are the only features that I have evidence of. Some pretty cool stuff. :D

Excellent collection Leslie. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

I do have the complete door with the sliding glass (actually acrylic), but on mine is up and down. Has the notch on the inside for the lock as in the pictures from the manual you posted. I only have crappy pictures and only from the outside. I will get it out of the storage and take a good shot once and for all.

In the mean time, an old picture that I have:

Excellent info Leslie !

Regarding the trapezoid side vents- I won't beat a dead horse, but this picture settles the argument in my mind:
Capture.JPG
I think that this is one of the same Patrol(s) that was featured in all the early documented photo renderings with the weird shaped vents (the 62 parts book, early brochures, etc) ... This was probably a late prototype, or an early beta pre-production vehicle, and I don't think it had side vents at all. Someone probably decided very late in the development cycle that side vents were to be added before production started, and so they doctored all the existing master copies of the marketing photos to represent the side vents, before sending the brochures and other documentation off to the printer.

Product documentation is usually fully printed and boxed up to ship out to the dealers before the first production vehicle rolls off the assembly line; so it was probably easier (and cheaper) to scribble the vents onto the existing master photos, than it would have been to go back re-photograph all the support literature so late in the cycle.

I personally doubt that any production patrols left the assembly line with fully functional trapezoid-shaped side vents... JMHO

regarding the drop-gate and side-mount spare carrier- the 62 parts book documents these as "optional" configurations, and the early 62-65 brochure (the one with the red patrol on the cover) also says they were optional.

The 62 parts book calls the swinging tire carrier the "ordinal" configuration:

Here's another one for Robert; the color of the front marker lights. You've already done the research, this is just another picture to add to your collection. This is a '62/'63 Patrol.

And this is just for the heck of it. ;)

Here's another one. This is a horn button that has shown up on a couple of early Patrols.

Yes, my 62 will have clear front marker lights - There seem to be many pictures of 62's and 63's out there that still have the clear lenses, leading me to think that the amber lenses were not the "default" color until 1964-ish.

I imagine Datsun probably recalled the early Patrols to change the lenses to amber, but some of the early trucks did not get the update.

Here are some more pics of original looking 62-63 Patrols with clear marker lenses:
