mitsubishi alternator?

Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

  Hey Everyone- The alternator on my 69 patrol quit yesterday so i pulled it and took it to be rebuilt. i noticed that it said mitsubishi on the back (couldnt read #s) and was wondering if anyone knew if this was a stock unit or just a mitsubishi unit that simply fits? there appears to be no modification to the wiring, and it bolts perfectly into the patrol's mounting hardware.

Yeah, its probably a stock unit.Just on the finishing end of a complete drive train/ electrical system resto on a 69 L60.It's pretty much original and utilizes a Hitachi Model D-608 (I do believe) alternator.Front and rear bearings for this unit are fairly common and should be available at your local bearing supply store for about 10 to 15 bucks for the pair. Brushes are mounted in a simple holder and although they may not be available from your local Nissan dealer.Your re-builder should have no trouble in modifying other ones to fit. The diode pack however uses the old large style diodes which I'm almost positive are no longer available any where (although I could be wrong). Hope fully you didn't cook a diode and hopefullyit may just be a regulator problem. Let me know how you make out.Scooter.

Hey Daner,   I don't know if Mitsubishi was the brand of alternator but a mitsubishi distributor was put on the Patrol, one of 3 diffrent distros. There was a 30A and 35A alternator available for the Patrol. The 35A is still available from Nissan if you have the right part number.   Ian

i would take it to a reputable elect. shop and have it re-built and have them change the rectifyer plate to a larger amperage like 65 amps. or you may have problems running kc lights winch etc. 35 amps is a little whimpy. i changed mine to a delco 1 wire 87 amp you can go as high as 100 amp i believe and the one wire config is a snap to hook up. i run 2. 800 amp batterys with a battery isolator and disconnect switch if one battery goes bad i can switch to the other to start the old girl. 1 runs the vehicle and one runs the 12,000 winch and the kc lights and a 750 amp power inverter under the  passenger seat and i have power outlets front and rear to run lights and etc. when hunting this is way handy.;

Hoss,  Where did you get the one wire alt. and do you have the part #? Also was it a direct fit or did you have to modify a bracket?  Keith

Hey Gang, This is an update to a message I posted here on 11/24/02 in regards to the mitsubishi alternator question posed by Daner. My mistake I quoted the distributor model number of 608 by mistake with out checkin' my notes first. Sorry, the memory gets a little foggy at times. Especially at around 6:00am after being up all night working on the Patrol.At any rate, turns out there was no model number or plate on the particular alternator on the one I've been working on. However according to the insignia embossed on the casing it'sdefinately mitsubishi. The bearings this particular unit utilizes are available from NTN.The front is a 6303LLUC3/2A and the rear is a 6202LLUC3/2A. Brushes as I recall are held in a simple holder. So mods of existing ones designed for other unrelated units should not be too difficult if an exact match at your local rebuilder can not be found. I agree with Hoss on the amperage change if possible. However a word of caution to the unanitiated on this action. That is, try to remain within 20amps of the units original out put as a margine of safety unless the unit is being re-wound in its entirety with a heavier guage wire. The reason for this being that internal resistance of the original smaller guage wire will cause over heating of the unit under heavy loads with increased amperage output. My advice to people that require lots more amperage for running high power lighting,winches and inverters would be to hunt down a more modern unit that would adapt easily to the existing mounting bracket that has an internal regulator. Keeping the original unit for stock appearances and utilization at a later date. A trip to your local Japanese auto wrecker for a parts hunt and brain storming mission should do the trick keeping an eye-out for units taken from or still attached to wrecks that were equipped with air conditioning. For these most always yeild alternators with the highest amperage output.Scooter

actually, good ol jc whitney has them all the way up to 100 amp i believe. i will have to look and see on the form and fit part.  i was not the orig. guy to change it over to delco, but i had to take it apart and do it over. like most of the mods the other guy made they were pretty slip shod. if you want to still use the wide fan belt you will have to change the pulley width on the alternator any good alternator shop will have the pulley, i had to use a longer fan belt. but i will have to look and see if i had to make any other mods. mark.

Update on the mitsubishi alternator: the local auto electric place rebuilt the unit for $35. they said it put out 35 amps.  rebuilding this particular unit for a higher output was not possible. he also is going to build a higher output unit from parts he has that will bolt directly in the patrol and should cost around $50-$60.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A SPEED SHOP THAT SELLS THE 1 WIRE ALTERNATOR THEY ARE GREAT FOR HOT ROD TYPE APPLICATIONS. I AM ALL FOR KEEPING THINGS ORIG. BUT WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU GOING TO FIND A HITACHI ( WHICH MEANS JUNK IN JAPANEESE) ALTERNATOR IF IT GOES OUT ON YOU IN MOAB. I'LL BET $5 I CAN HAVE A DELCO INSTALLED BEFORE THE LOCAL PARTS GUY STOPS LAUGHING ABOUT LOCATING OR REBUILDING A HITACHI. BY THE WAY THE (JUNK) THING WAS A PUNN I WOULD NOT WANT TO START A FIGHT. I KNOW SOME OF YOU A WOUND A LITTLE TIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO NON-ORIG. PARTS. MARK.
