hey everyone.
i had posted on patrol4x4 and a few guys had recommend me over to here.
bit of a back story first. i have a 1984 MQ patrol with a P40 engine and 5 speed box. i hadnt had it all that long when i spun a no1 big end. pulled the motor out and stripped it down with the intention of doing it up. when i sent the crank away to get check and machined they notified me that the crank was bent and needed to be replaced. now knowing that there arent a huge amount of these engines out there im having some trouble getting a hold of a new crank. then engine reconditioner told me that there were 2 different p40 engine with mine having the later model crank in it. it should be noted that the engine in the car isnt the original P40 that it came with from factory. it had an exchange motor fitted 20 or so years ago.
my questions
1. does anyone know how to tell the difference between early and late model engines/cranks?
2. does anyone know where there might be a crank?
3. is there any motor that can easily be fitted in place of the P40?
thanks

You might check with a forklift parts place. I'm pretty sure they run P40's in lots of forklifts.

Re: p40 engine out of an MQ
We never got the P40 here in the states; the 60 series Patrol had the P engine.
You could try Motorpower Inc here http://motorpower.net , the are usually very helpful with our P engines.

Regarding question 1: The main difference between the P engine (older) and the P40 (newer) crankshaft if at #1 journal (the one closest to the pulley)senseiz wrote: 1. does anyone know how to tell the difference between early and late model engines/cranks?

P engine
Journal #1 dia: 68.229 - 68.204mm (2.6862 - 2.6852 in)
P40 engine
Journal #1 dia: 69.275 - 69.300mm (2.7273 - 2.7283 in)
The other journals, #2 - #7, are the same in both engines: 69.275 - 69.300mm (2.7273 - 2.7283 in)
It's not feasible to interchange the #1 journal bearing, since the block and the cap are narrower on the P40 engine. This bearing is the one that controls the axial play.
It looks that the only way to check will be with a micrometer at hand.
