Rons' 66 Patrol

I hosted the 2nd annual Northern Arizona predator hunt this last weekend. I had 39 teams register this year. I didn't place, But i had a lot of fun. And we helped the deer, antelope, and cow populations.

that sounds fun. on the tranny rebuild, sorry for your problems. but it will be a great source of repair knowledge, and a how to do it, if you break it all down with pictures. i am needing to get into mine, and have put it off because i have never done it.

second gear will grind sometimes when i shift, and my datsun guy i use keeps blaming me, saying i must think this tranny will shift like my roadster.

Something i found when i was separating the trany and transfer case on mine, that could be a part of your problem. If you remove the plate at the rear of your transfer case, (where the PTO would bolt up) you will see a large nut (no not me im at home) at the rear of the main (output) shaft. This nut holds the main shaft and the transfer case gears tight so there isn't any back and forth movement. Now if this nut is loose the main shaft will float back and forth causing second gear grind, and the common problem of popping out of gear. Mine pops out of second gear a lot.

that is what my Datsun guy claimed he found, and also claimed that he tightened it up. it all started after i made two trips pulling a trailer with a pallet of top soil home. kicking myself now for being lazy. the trailer was parked behind the patrol and i just hooked it up and went to town. but i don't think he tore into the tranny to see if any bearings were bad.

After pulling mine apart and discovering that large gap between the input and main shaft which would definitely effect second gear, im going to shim the main shaft to close that gap. This will put the synchro closer to its mating surface on the main shaft. This should take care of most of the second gear grind. I will let you know how it turns out on mine.

My Patrol has been parked for well over a year now. The rear end went out. Me and my son took a rear end out of one of my parts Patrols and installed it in mine. We transfered the shafts along with the backing plates and WOW it runs great! Its always had a whine in the rear end since ive had it, but now no noise at all! Took us 2.5 hours. I should have done this a long time ago.

I forgot how much i missed it! Ron Jrs Patrol Pick UP isnt done yet, so we got my 67 Chevy PU going so he could drive it. Last week someone slashed the tires on it. I dont have $1600.00 right now to replace them, so that gave us the incintive to get the Patrol running. I hope they dont slash my Patrol tires now.

Actually, your update has inspired me - I think I need to make some space next to the 65 restoration project, and pull the 66 death-machine in, and start throwing it back together.
