Tempted to buy a Patrol, what do you think?

Hey there,

i'm a 28 years old swiss architect, currently travelling down the american continents. I have been travelling in a super fancy customized landcruiser with a friend an so far we have made it from California down to costa rica. His and my plans have changed a little so i want to get my own car in colombia, i want something basic, reliable, easy to fix with little electric crap inside that can get me wherever i want to go. In a facebook group i found a 79 nissan patrol and fell in love. Its supposed to cost only around 2800.- dollars and to my noob-eyes look like all i ever wanted. However i have no idea what to look for in these vehicles. What are the parts that are prone to failure / that i should check and ask about? Also, is the vehicle long enough to build a sleeping platform in the back? How suitable is it to drive in the high andes and the amazonian rainforest? Is this the right car to do an extensive roadtrip in, or is it a stupid idea? I would very much appreciate the help of some people who actually know something about the car and arent just blinded by its sheer beauty, like i am!

Welcome to 60Patrol! And congratulations on your awesome trip! I think you would be very happy with a Patrol for this trip. The Patrol has more horsepower which makes climbing the mountain roads easier than in an FJ40.

As Riverpatrol say, we can help to find a good condition Patrol. About your question Nissan Patrol is the best option to climp mountains in Colombia. Today A LOT of Nissan Patrol still working hard daily. When you stay in Colombia will confirm by yourself. They are very very strong machines.
