On the same 4WD trip as my previous post, I noticed that when I changed gears the engine stalled but since I was moving the engine would fire up again when the gears were engaged.
More investigation showed the Patrol would no longer idle. Drop down below 1000 (??) RPM and it would stall.
At higher revs the Patrol ran fine. So I was able to drive it home and around today providing I didn't let the revs drop.
I suspect it is a carby problem the idling and slow jet part - maybe a blocked slow jet.
A quick look today and I really couldn't see how to clean it . I have a VHA 42-22 (I think).
Any ideas?

Most probably, the Slow Jet has become clogged. Very common.
Take a look at the following parts diagram. It's item #8, with the arrow. You'll have to open the side cover, remove the floater, and then the Metering Body (#2) where the slow jet is located.

I've managed to dismantle the carby but unable to move the metering body.
I've undone the 5 screws holding the metering box and removed the power valve, but there is no movement in the metering body.
I haven't removed the accelerating pump rod, but I would have expected some movement in the metering body.
Is there something else I need to remove?

SORTED. Just required a little force to separate the metering body from the gasket.
Where is the main jet? Is it the little unnumbered item near the main float in the diagram?
My main jet has "175" stamped on it. This doesn't rate on the main jet table. I assume "175" is 0 to 1,000m.
What would happen if I put a higher altitude main jet in???

My idle problem is fixed. I cleaned the whole carby so I think the slow jet was the culprit.
Actually it was fairly easy to disassemble the carby. I think it took less that 1 hour.

Glad you sorted out the problem. A whole cleaning is always welcome.
Regarding changing the main jet, 175 is the default one. In one of the parts manuals they list the following:
Jet-Main #175 (STD)
Jet-Main #170 (1000m to 2000m) [3280 ft - 6560 ft]
Jet-Main #165 (2000m to 3000m) [6560 ft - 9840 ft]
Since I used to live at 2800m [9200 ft] I was always tweaking the main jet, and in my case installing the #165. Fuel consumption did improve, but performance wise was not noticeable. Since I was often going to the beach at sea level, it was dangerous for the engine to function with a smaller jet in that case, since piston knocking happens (too lean mixture) so I decided to stay with the #175 all the time.
The previous carburetor model fitted to the Patrol, the VC Type, was better in that sense, since you could change the Main Jet on the outside. Takes a couple of minutes, so it was worth the trouble.
