Large (Aussie) Size axle Nut

The Aussies received a beefier version of the 60 in some respects. One of those versions included larger axles. I knew that but plowed ahead hoping the axle hub nut I purchased of Ebay was of the smaller US version....since no specs were offered.

Naturally I was zonked...again.

Therefore, if any of you need a large size rear axle interior hub nut I have one with freight I paid $100.

I remember seeing one offered on ebay in the past for a 720 datsun pickup. do you know if they would be closer in size.

I have saved from years ago what somebody did to remove and tighten the nut. He purchased Spindle Nut Wrench W1271 that's intended to be used in front hubs, cut the upper portion in order to reveal a cylinder that will slide over the axle, and then welded two arms for leverage. The pictures I saved are not that good, but you'll get the idea. In the following picture on the left you see the spindle nut wrench with the upper part of the body removed, and on the right the arms welded to the remaining portion. The idea is to mimic the special tool called in the service manual. And by the way, there's not a single mention of this special tool for the light duty axles that we have. The only reference is for the heavy duty axle that Aussies have.

Richard, if you just measure the axle that maybe the HD version and it is larger than standard duty then it will fit. I think they only had two sizes.

Esteban. That tool explains why all the nuts i've seen are so chewed up, nobody over the years has had a tool like yours!

Ron from AZ is sending some more parts and the shims we apparently need. Next week King Kong Craig will take another stab at Presidio Patrol's rear hubs.

On another note, it seems there is a shortage of good backing plates. I'm thinking about having some made after I run out of essential projects. They shouldn't be too hard, just need to get some pricing.

The problem will still be how to implement a lock washer in that case. I don't think there's enough thread in the axle to run two nuts.

In the Summit Racing page one person has used the spindle nut wrench in a front axle Dana 44 application.

might be able to either use a larger locking washer and then flatted to the hex side or turn the nut down and reindex the notches in the nut.

or do like they did on the pass side... weld the nut!
