Transfer Case and Transmission Case Seal

Greetings, I have read and re-read all the posts.

Please direct me to an OEM (double lip seal) for the Transfer Case Input Shaft. Nissan informed me today that they no longer offer them. It seems the SKF seal is slightly too tight and is not water tight.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you Peter and Leslie, I ordered two finguring I'd foul one somehow.

I truely appreciate your input.

My next mission is to figure why the recommended main gear shift top seal inside diameter is so much larger than the gear shift rod. It appears to me, since I'm looking at it that I'm confusing the language as I am quite sure I'm holding either and input or output shaft seal.

Patrollees Worldwide, this is a technical alert, though I'm sure I am the last to know it,

My 65, Presidio Patrol (CCV5), had a transmission oil leak, but only when warm and driving. Not while sitting or cold.

Anticipating that it was a fouled topside seal we removed the transmission cover.

Here is what I learned over the last 4 hours.

A). Though I have every manual ever produced for the Patrol L60 not a one indicates whether the transmission oil level is to be checked with the dipstick screwed fully in or resting above the screws....screwed in our level was at 40% full.

B). A "full set" of Patrol seals and gaskets does not include but about half of those needed. A "full set" from Australia costs 200 bills dedicated to our revolutionary hero, delivered....so this misleading advertising is costly.

This forum does have instructions on how to make the topside transmission seals, thank you.

C). In my case the leak was a broken transmission oil vent valve. There are two, one in front of the main gear shifter interface to the transmission, the second centered in the rear top seal. My oil vent valve was missing the brass air release valve so after the oil heated up...oil bubbled out.

The OEM oil vent is a metric 10mm x 1mm thread pattern.

I could not find a forum source so Eddy the Eagle, Kirk and I rethreaded the hole pattern for a modern 1/4" value and used a hose to achieve the same purpose. We re-used the working one licated on in front of the gear shifter.

Help needed:
So do I measure the transmission fluid with a resting or screwed in dip stick?

I have never known of a complete seal kit for the transmission and transfer, I think most are using silicon sealer where gaskets are used.

Under normal conditions when you are checking and adding to the transmission fluid level you are accessing the dipstick through the little hole on the trans cover, cussing the designers of such an impossible method. For that reason I always check the level unthreaded. It won't make much difference, you can always under fill a little if you are concerned about overfilling.

I have heard of the leak that you describe before, that it leaks from the vent while driving. I have seen others use a similar work around, attaching a hose to the vent to divert the drainage away from the top of the transmission. At one time someone found the cause of this affliction, but I've slept since then and don't remember what it was.

Thank you, the vent leak was on the 65. It is almost ready for Lake City. Just one more rear diff seal to re-seal for the 3rd time, then it is READY!

Today, with everyone's help I am off to replace the front 4WD transfer case shaft seal on the 63. Oh no, it could not have failed when we had the complete mid section pulled out ...that would have been too easy...but two weeks after that...and a really tough field test late..... it gave up the ghost. I have a trunk full of seals found within your posts! Thanks again.

We plan to leave all the other seals and transfer case insitu, it looks like it should work.

My friend, Shannon whom is an engineer and mechanic, replaced the front drive transfer case seal today. I took everyone's seal suggestions for this seal and bought several of each. Here are the ones that worked.

First, and most importantly, the transfer case was not removed. The only part removed was the front drive shaft.

We used the dual seal approach though it is possible to do it with a single seal, please note.

Dual seal approach:

Inner seal was bought on ebay - size 1.969" x 2.874" x .0472"
Outer seal - NAPA part # 18979

Single Seal Approach:
The only place I found the OEM seal was actually in the "Full gasket set" I purchased from Australia. I have two sets so I have two of these seals know in my "traveling spares kit".

Then it looks like Eddy the Eagle forgot to re-route my battery cable so we did that, though we still need to secure the cable in it like original routing over the transmission rather than under it.
