Hopefully you are not confusing fading for a master cylinder leak. I noted on the white Patrol that the brakes needed adjustment as it was possible to pump them once and get a "higher" pedal. However, I noted no sponginess or hydraulic fade. So. since you are a flat lander, we are giving you a "brake"....probably not funny but who could resist. Some times it's hard to "stop" when a good pun comes to mind. Oh well, this line of thought is "going down hill fast', so back to the technical stuff.

A properly selected low range gear should require that you to never touch the brakes except for an occasional obstacle (such as a tricked -out Jeep with a couple of white hairs; "Look Martha, a waterfall, ain't seen that in Iowa"). Ideally, you will need to use the accelerator to get down hill.

And one last thing to clarify our discussion over the fourth. Patrol's have second gear synchro's, Right Ms. River? Mine does but David's does not. And that complicates the little issue of solid up or down shifts.

Yes, synchros for 2nd and 3rd gear. And yes, without them smooth shifting is pretty impossible.

Not quite... if you learn to double clutch properly. Not to brag, but I've been doing that ever since the Patrol has been in my hands.

This is the first site that I've found that has the theory properly explained:

https://auto.howstuffworks.com/double-clutch-shift.htm

Wikipedia has this:

The double clutching technique involves the following steps:
  • - The accelerator (throttle) is released, the clutch pedal is pressed, and the gearbox is shifted into neutral.
    - The clutch pedal is then released, the driver matches the engine speed to the gear speed either using the throttle (accelerator) (when changing to a lower gear) or waiting for engine speed to decrease (when changing to a higher gear) until they are at a level suitable for shifting into the next gear (although double clutching is almost always used for downshifting only).
    - At the moment when the revs between input shaft (i.e. engine revs) and gear are closely matched, the driver then instantly presses the clutch again to shift into the next gear. The result should be a very smooth gear change.

Thanks again to the largest Patrol brain trust left on the globe!

Once again I've been given a "brake". So I will adjust the brake nuts and Patrol without fear in CCV7. That is a very important tidbit of information. I hope to be able to get back there in Oct to do that while Plateaucal is counting butterflies in the forrest. Then, until the white Patrol gets a new Brake MC it is good to go except the occasional slipping out of second gear.

I have mastered the art of double clutching. However, without synchros it makes down shifting almost impossible. It appears synchos were included in the 67 model year.

Rene is checking out Presidio Patrol's shifting issues as we speak. He thinks the wrong grease might have been used and that clutch was installed by the land pirates during the bad ole days of Hill Country Garage. King Kong Craig was excellent but the garage owner was something else. Who knows what they had pooled on the shop floor to re-use.

Many thanks again from my PTO winch to the tip of my tailpipe,

Crowded on the Loop is an understatement. We were in that area with 17 vehicles in our group on 8/1/19 and met a few others with several in their group. We ran CAllifornia Pass, hurricane Pass, and Mineral Creek back out to 550. I'm just glad we never met anybody on Mineral Creek trail right alongside the creek cause there wasn't anywhere to pull over. I couldn't imagine running those trails with no power steering, no power brakes, and a fuel system that didn't like high altitudes.

And that is why we haven't been up there for better than 10 years. This place has become an open air Disneyland. BTW, we run side-by-sides up in the hills. 4x4's jeeps and trucks are passe'.

Greetings those whom appreciate the proven,

Here are few pictures from Lake City this week in Lake City.

As usual I can't figure out how to load the photos so they tell the story.

Patrolling when possible,
