Dual Tcase setup/Lockers

Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

Does anyone have information regarding a Dual transfer case setup and/or lockers available for a 1969 Nissan Patrol? I am looking to do this. Also, how to obtain lift (without spring over). Thanks, Mike

Mike,   Dual transfercases will not fit in a wheelbase as short as a Patrol (2200mm = 86.6 inch). The rear driveshaft is already very short at approx 18 inch. This is why you don't see dual transfercases in CJ's or FJ40's although some Toy pickups have them (much longer wheelbase).   There are a lot a ways to obtain a lift. Depends on what type of lift and how much. Options are a body lift (recommend no more than 2 inch), lift shackles (lift is half the extra length of the shackle), suspension lift (custom leaf springs from National Spring or comparing stock spring specs to aftermarket spring width and lengths available). Ironman Suspensions in Australia has lift kits for the Patrol but has not been returning emails so you would have to call them. A spring over with stock springs is another option but not what you want though. Quarter elliptic custom set ups are available from a few places like Avalanche Engineering. It just depends on how much lift and what type.   David

Mike,   Forgot about your question on lockers. None available (not even ARB) and if they were you would not want them with the stock axle. The shafts are pretty large in diameter (sim to D44) but very brittle with the older 10 spline style cut. Also, axle shafts are a limited item unless you go custom. If your thinking of making a rockcrawling machine out of your Patrol then you will probably end up like all the others (CJ's, FJ's, ...) with a swapped in driveline from something beefier and newer. Otherwise you will be frustrated...   David

Argh. So pretty much I am stuck with the 2.26? I guess it's better than my 88 Pathfinder's 2.02... There aren't any reducers out there? Why would a spring over be a bad idea?

Spring overs aren't a bad idea. I thought you stated you did not want a spring over so that's why I said "not what you want though". They are actually a great idea. Pros are they allow a stock ride, more flex, better under axle clearance and room for some big meats. Cons are usually bump steer from the new steering angles and performing the work (PITA) or paying someone else.   It just depends how hard you what to use your Patrol. My 89 Cherokee doesn't have all the stuff you see on todays lookers. It has 30's, stock transfercase 2.72 ratio, 4.0L engine... But the suspension mods I made allow me to go where my buddy with his front locked Willys goes no problem. He calls my XJ "SAM". Super Articulating Machine. So go slow, keep all 4 tires in contact with the ground (that's why IFS sucks) and you'll amaze people.   David

I just figured with a spoa, you would have to have some MIGHTY meats... Has anyone done this to a patrol? What size tire did you use? I think I could fit a 34x 9.50 TSL tire with minimal trimming, if any. I would use my stock Nissan Pathfinder rims. Would I experience MASSIVE breakage? Or would the axle hold up? It will probably go unlocked until I swap the rear end for an FJ40 rear end(?) Do I need to do anything special for a spoa? I have a friend who has a shop with everything I would possibly need... welders, hydro lift, etc.

Oh, I want it to at least be able to do what my Pathfinder does. (1988 Nissan Pathfinder V6, lockright in rear, Ford F100 coil spring of '74 vintage (2" lift), and slightly cranked tbars with 32" BFG muds.) Yes, the tires rub... Pretty badly.

36's?!?!?! That's insane! I had no idea that much tire would be needed to run a SPOA.. I was thinking 32's, MAYBE... Hmm... Do you have a locker, or a gear reducer? Or lower gears? How do you turn those? That's crazy! How much longer is your driveshaft?

Shaved Ape,   Did you have to get a Double Cardan driveshaft for the rear because of the severe angle when you did your SOA? Did you have to cut the knuckles off, tilt the pinion up and reweld the front end to still have any caster for the front? If not, what did you do and how does it handle on road? I have been seriously wanting to do a SOA but I figured with such a short wheelbase it would be major $$ for the above mentioned items. Did you do your own or have a shop do it?   Thanks In Advance, David PS: I would also love to see some pics.
