Camshaft and lifters

Post by Tknc »

Does anyone know of a source for a cam and lifters for a 69 P engine? I have read where the P40 cam should work but not the lifters. I have not posted in a long time, but read the forum every day :). From reading it seems rings, bearings, gaskets, pistons, springs and valves will not be a problem, just not sure about the cam and lifers.

Not for sure, but believe the P40 rotates opposit direction from P.
P has timing gears and P40 uses a chain.

Check with the forklift engine rebuilders...

Free advice: Don't confuse the issue by even mentioning the P40 engine... As Bill points put- It is a totally different animal, with a few parts that just happen to cross-ref.

Refer to the PPU241 engine (which is the most common engine code that Nissan gave the Model P, when used in utility applications. Komatsu also referred to the P engine as the PPU in all of their documentation.

years ago when I started calling forklift shops looking for parts, I would ask for Nissan Model P engine, and they'd never find anything in their catalogs...

Once I learned that the PPU241 was the same engine, I started asking them if they had a part for either a Nissan or Komatsu PPU engine, and suddenly is was like "Oh yeah, I've got 10 of those in stock"

Did you mic your cam lobes? are you sure it needs to be replaced? or is it missing?

If you decide to take a shot with a used cam, I think I might still have an extra one out in the garage (I can't remember if I sold it to Kardok, or not... )

moore_rb and jwgreen, thank you. That is a bit steep for a cam. I was planning on having the cam and lifters that i have reground if they were good cores. Unfortunately they are not. Two lobes and the corresponding lifters have damage that would not clean up. Yes I would be interested if anyone has a good core and a couple lifters that can be reground.

Update on a cam and lifters. I purchased some engine parts from a forum member which included a cam and some lifters. I dropped the new to me cam and 14 lifters off at a cam grinder earlier this week. Original quote is $125 to regrind the cam and $7 per lifter to regrind them. I'll post some pictures after I pick them up.

Glad to hear that you've sorted this out. The pictures will be great to have as well as the machine shop source.

Esteban, I wanted to inspect the cam and lifters before I put the machine shops name on the forum, and from my initial inspection I don't think I will. The lifters have enough crown on them, about .001" from the center out, but the surface finish is a little rougher than I would like to see. The surface finish on the cam lobes is also a little rougher than I would like to see. I can polish the lifters, but the cam is what it is. I guess the true test will be when the engine fires up. The bill came to $223 so maybe it will be worth the gamble.
