Possible 5 speed swap

Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

Possible 5 speed swap

Post by npca-roc8man »

I have been researching all 5 speed trannies available and may have found a fit for us. The Toyota FJ60 (non US version only) used a 5 speed (H55f) with a granny gear 1st (4.84) and a .84 OD 5th. It mates up to their 19 spline split transfercase. Both have parts readily available and the xfercase has outputs to match the Patrol xfercase (pass side).   It appears we would need a AA Bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing too. The best price I have found so far (for 1 unit, not a multi discount - hint) is $2k US for a used tranny and xfercase combo. Not bad really since Toyota trannies are rated at the top. By the time you throw in the BH, PP, clutch and driveshafts your looking around $3k. Overall length (depending on who you ask) of the combo is 22 to 23 inches from front of trans to rear output of Xfercase. That compares well to the Patrol setup which is approx 20 inches for the same measurement. I still need to find out how long the BH is that is required. Since the Patrol BH is pretty long, the new BH may be a couple of inches shorter which may mean no driveshaft changes too!!   I'll post more info soon. ANyone interested? A group (pallet) purchase would save some big dollars.   Chad (AlaskaPatrol), keep up the good work on the OD for the existing xfercase incase this falls thru or gets too costly.   David

All the quotes so far are from TLC specialists (Man-A-Fre, TLC Connection, Mudrak). I just got the best quote today from a Australian wrecking yard that specializes in 4x4's.Their quote for a used 5 speed and transfer case with shifter and knob is $2200 AUD. That equates to approx $1100 US dollars (2:1). Their shipping estimate seems pretty low but they think $400 AUD (again $200 US).That is a pretty good deal. Parts would be easy to get and much less expensive. Plus you get the granny 1st gear. Also, the clutch arrangement is much easier to work on (more normal unlike the Patrol).I'm still waiting for a couple of other quotes but I'm sure if I ordered a bunch, the price would get even better.I'll keep everyone in the know.David

Sorry for the typo on your name Chaz. You keep up the effort on the OD. It would be cool for some people who don't want the involvement of a driveline swap. I actually would be interested too if the price was right.   Thanks again, David

Possible 5 speed swap

Hey guys (and gals if there are any),   I'd be VERY interested in a 5spd conversion.  The $3500 US from Marks off road ?(australia?) was a little too steep but now we're talking nearer my range.  Besides, I'm about to have to rebuild the clutch and while it's apart, or if I have to swap that also to make the tranny swap, then now's the perfect time.   I'll try to keep up to date with the msg. board, but I don't get online that often.  So if someone gets good info for an order, etc.  PLEASE e-mail me with the details.  Thanks.

Possible 5 speed swap

Post by npca-roc8man »

I just received an email from the Australian wrecker that offered the Toyota 5 speed and transfercase for $2200 AUD (approx $1140 US). I asked if we had enough interest that a quantity (4 or 5) buy was possible, what kind of discount could we expect. They would drop their price to $2050 AUD (approx $1062 US based on the latest currency rates). Still need to add shipping, but a large order would help there too.   Based on the experience of someone with an FJ40 who did the swap, your looking at the following:   Tranny and xfercase  (used)                            $1062 Shipping (approx)                                            $200 Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing          $300 Driveshaft mods (high estimate)                       $200 Bellhousing                                                      $200   Total without labor                            Approx $2000   Labor / Any Fabrication estimate   Additional $650   Grand Total                                        Approx $2700   I rounded up slightly to be conserative. Note that this is for a good used tranny/xfercase. If you wanted to rebuild it, you would have to add for that. Also note that the parking brake is gone with this combo. However, Mudrak offers a parking brake kit similar to the Patrols to fit this combo but it runs $350. Otherwise you have to retro one to the Patrol brakes or swap to disks or swap axles.   The least expensive NEW 5 speed is I've been quoted is $2000 US WITHOUT a transfercase.   So far, this appears to be the only 5 speed / xfercase combo that is short enough, does NOT require an expensive AA adapter and has the output of the xfercase to match the Patrol axles. You could do alot of different driveline swaps with other OD trannies but it would be much more pricey (adapters, diff axles, ...) and complicated.   Who is really serious about a 5 speed in their Patrol based on the above estimates? I was looking to possibly order one for me mid summer.   David
