patrol tansfer case similar to spicer 18?
I was looking in a friends jeep magazine and it had a picture of the spicer 18 transfer case which was used in most jeeps up into the 1960's. Anybody actually compared these two transfer cases side by side? Maybe the spicer could be adapted to fit a patrol or maybe an overdrive unit for a spicer could be adapted to fit a patrol. This is just and idea I have. Might be dreamin' but thought I would through it out there. Anybody have any input?

From what I've been able to tell, the bolt patterns between the two are NOT the same. The Patrol xfercase pattern is much more similar to a early Land Cruiser (not exactly the same though). All three do share the same input spline count however (10 spline was very common back then). You could mount a D18 to the Patrol tranny (why though?) with an adapter (big $). I am trying to get the exact dimensions of the trans input shaft (Dia and spline) but I don't have mine apart. If you know someone who does, please pass this info on. I'm researching possible tranny swaps. Thanks David

i to was wondering about that,my uncle has a 49 or 53 jeep on the deer lease and i did some work on it-the transfer case and it really is very close as far as i can tell, also the axles are very much alike.i do know that back then any surplus parts the govt had was sent off to foriegn countries ,so i believe it to be possiblefor them to interchange

Hi folks...In response to David's question about dimensions of the input shaft, I have a spare transmission for my 66( what a lump!). The following dimensions are in inches. Starting with the pilot tip: the pilot on my trans is1.415" long, by.750" in Dia..There is a 30 degree bevel on the tip .170" long. The shaft steps up in diameter to 1.0" for a length of .175".The spline portion is next with an O.D. of 1.375"and a length of 2.062" protruding from a support collar. There are 10 splines. The collar is 1.684" in diameter, that section is 2.34" long. The shape at this point is a little hard to describe. The collar flares out for a length of .280" and then forms a round recess( as if a big felt seal or o-ring was going to fit here) . The O.D. of this section is 3.778" with a length of .440". The last area is the irregular shape of the flange that forms the base of the portion that I've been calling a collar. It is.470" thick, and is bolted to the front face of the transmission case with 7 bolts. Clear as mud right?Good luck on the search. I would love to get rid of the stock box-o-rocks tranny . I'm looking around as well.If I come up with a budget swap I'll let you know.Mike B.

Mike!! seems you have a Micrometer.??!! NO? well can you do me a huge favor?? Can you take the case cover off the back of the tcase?? you do have one right??. and measure the size of the shaft, the no.of splines.. and the tooth count on the gear. All this is on the back of the case where the Main gear shaft is. thanx Chaz.alaskapatrol

Thanks for the info Mike. I think I may have found a resonable 5 speed and xfercase combo that will fit the stock drivetrain pretty well. Price is what I'm working now. I'll post it on a diff post so we can see what curiousity we can develop. Thanks again, David
