engine swap

Hey Ok Ok... I know you, or most of you all are wanting to keep this rig Original.. But for me here in Alaska, its kinda hard to do,the shipping charges will choke a horse. I am wanting to know of anyone that has swapped in a Chevy or GMC 6 cylinder either a 250 or 292, I remember a pic somewhere but cant find it that someone had taken and posted it but I dont know who or where I found it. lemme know if anyone has anyinfo on this.. My ol 6 is still running but il like to put in a more powerful engine something I can get parts for easyer. P.S. Ill get some pictures of my ole`girl on here soon, befor I start my resto project this summer.And as I go.Ive already started somethings like a Landcruiser rearend from a 1973. thanx again for all your extra info on this site. Just a blurb from my foggy memory but a year or two one of the members mentioned that he had a Chevy 292 straight six in his Patrol. A problem he mentioned was the clutch pressure plate had to match the Chevy engine and the Patrol disc and he had to make a spacer to fill in between the engine and the bellhousing. I think I would also look into measuring the Chev 4 or 5 speed or auto trans and transfer case to see if it would fit the Patrol to minimize hassel. My '69 has a 5 speed (Marks 4wd australia) and it is worth every dime. Check with Advance Adapters, they sell a conversion kit for the Patrol. Good Luck, Gary

Hey thanx for the tip man, I was wondering where you got the 5spd got an addy for that are there any more avilable.?? also can mabey you look up who that was or mabey spread the word a lil for me it would really be helpfull. Also to those that have rebuilt there p40 engines,, can you please tell me or email me the info on what you did and where your got the bearings pistons rings ect,, !! am about to either do a swap or rebuild this engine, then get to work on the rest of the running gear... any helpfull ideas would be great Thanx in advance. My compression was low so I did the rings, all bearings, valves and had the head rebuilt as well. I didn't need a new crank, cam or pistons. If you look at the Compatible Parts section, you will see that you are getting quality items from them (Clevite 77 bearings, chrome rings, Osvat heavy duty valves,...). The entire front end jumps about 4 inches when I let out the clutch due to all the torque. It's awesome. The P40 engine is an industrial engine. It weights about 650 lbs (more than some big blocks) so it is intended to last a long time. Stick with it. Parts prices are not as bad as they once were thanks to a few places that stock rebuild kits for the forklift. Now I just wish I could find a 5 speed tranny... Btw, where in Alaska are you? I'll be in Anchorage, then Illiamna in late Aug to early Sept (Bow Bou hunt). David

David, thnax for your input man,its a big help.. All ive done to this engine since bought it in1990, drove it to Alaska, was a head gasket that was about 5 years ago. rebuilt the distributor once, now I wanna get the electronic setup for it If I can find one, that seems to be the prob right now,,Anyways thanx man if you find anything on where to get a 5spd or something lemme know, Im wondering what other tranny will fit in the Patrol, and lkeep the same T.C,? i havent started looking yet but an soon as i get it un buried from the snow, lol. No problem. That's why this forum exists. To help us few die hard Patrol fans. The reason I posted the tranny / xfercase question is exactly what you mentioned. I have info for many existing trannies and xfercases but my manual doesn't list what the Patrol has. If I could get that data, then I would be able to compare it to the data I have and maybe find an easy match. I'll give you a jingle when I get to Anchorage so I can check out your Patrol. CYa, David
