Re: Rehab of Patrol L60-2-00655
Got the gas tank cleaned out today. Will be going back to the Patrol on Friday, so have been collecting things I need to bring.
Plan is to get the tank (keg
) back in, put the cleaned up fuel filter (with a new element) back in, and hook up the fuel lines so there is a reliable gas source. And, if the handbrake works, I'll drive it up to the carport and start on the brakes. Plan would be to pull the drums off and strip all the parts off the backing plates, and bring the parts home for cleaning/evaluation/repair.
*****Got a question on wheel cylinders. From what I've read on the forum, the rear wheel cylinders on the USA-imported Patrols were 1-1/8"diameter, but the Australian rear wheel cylinders I've found on eBay are 1" diameter. Is there a source for new 1-1/8" rear wheel cylinders? Or 1-1/8" dia rebuild kits?

I think all rear wheel cylinders are 1", including those for the heavy duty rear axle found in Australia. I've checked the different parts manuals and can't find a different wheel cylinder for USA Patrols.r1lark wrote:*****Got a question on wheel cylinders. Just in case you buy the Australian rear wheel cylinders, there's a small modification you'll have to do:
Rear wheel cylinder mod for thick brake shoes

You might even find that you don't need to do that modification. I don't think they needed to do that on Punkin.Esteban wrote: Just in case you buy the Australian rear wheel cylinders, there's a small modification you'll have to do:

Thanks Esteban. I went back to the link that I saved (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3078&start=15) where faux40 had written an extensive paper on using a dual chambered master cylinder. I had seen where he had used 1-1/8" rear wheel cylinders in his calculations, and made note of that in my parts spreadsheet. For some reason, I did not see the correction note that faux40 added - essentially saying that the USA Patrols used a 1" rear wheel cylinder diameter. Thanks for correcting me Esteban!!Esteban wrote:I think all rear wheel cylinders are 1", including those for the heavy duty rear axle found in Australia. I see Patrols North (desertrat here on the forum) are out of the rears and one side of the fronts. I had messaged him thru his website about when they might be back in stock, but have not heard back yet.

Re: Rehab of Patrol L60-2-00655
Friday didn't work out, so I went to work on the Patrol today. Got the tank (keg) back in, hooked it up to the fuel line, installed the filter assembly, and hooked up the hose from the filter outlet to the fuel pump inlet.
Used regular black fuel hose (ethanol rated), instead of the original clear plastic tubing, between the filter and fuel pump. I had never noticed that the Patrol had this same clear plastic tubing for fuel hose as my '66 Toyota Crown. I was able to save some of the clear tubing on the Crown (in the trunk where Toyota used it for the gas tank vent too), but the piece on the Patrol between the filter and the fuel pump was as hard as a rock, and yellowed really bad. Why did the Japanese manufacturers use this stuff??
So the Patrol is running off the tank now. Had hoped to get the brakes removed, but realized that I needed to clean up the rusty threads on the ends of the wheel studs, and then lube and carefully pull each lug nut off one at a time. (These wheels haven't been off since the '70s, and with no hubcaps the lugs and ends of the wheel studs were rusty. So, that was the job the for rest of the time there. At least next trip, I'll be ready first thing to pull the wheels and drums off, and get all the brake stuff off.
Will probably pull the carb next trip too, and bring it home to rebuild it. The idle circuit isn't working; interestingly tho, after all these years sitting the accelerator pump still works fine. Had hoped to be able to wait to rebuild it, but that really needs to be done now.

River, were these SAE (Imperial) thread connections for double flared tubing, or metric thread connections for bubble flared tubing, or ??RiverPatrol wrote:4wd_products on eBay always seems to have them in stock. I used these on Punkin. https://www.ebay.com/itm/331677862533?s ... 1438.l2649
