Folding Windshield Problems

Post by npca-jack »

I have a 1967 Nissan Patrol that is mostly modified(See Jack's Patrol). Does anyone else have problems with the engine hood not being strong enough to support the windshield when it is in the down position? Also what do you recommend for the rubber supports on the hood? Thanks.

Jack...Alex mentioned a specific year of Jeep for the rubber stops....can't remember what year......you could take a piece of thin metal moulding about 2 to 3" wide & use that for a brace. I'd measure from the inside lip of the hood and follow the curvature all the way across and down to the other lip. I'd cut the piece about an 1" longer and then temporarly pressure fit it, mark it where the hood holes are, and drill them out. By pressure fitting it, the rubber stop bolts will hold the brace in place, providing  additional support. Hate to drill  xtra holes in the hood if not necessary........Trig

I have this same problem. One thing i did to try and cure it was to take some large peices of rubber and glue them under the supports so that they contact the supports and the hood. This didn't work, but it made the hood somewhat stronger. What I have contemplated doing is to run another support under the hood that is perpendicular to the horizontal support in the back and joins this support to the from horizontal support (if looking under the hood facing the windshield) This might interfere witht the aircleaner though. About the rubber bumpers, I found a bumper on my mom's explorer that worked. On an early 90's ford Explorer, they have small round rubber bumpers that the rear hatch rubs against when closed. These are somewhat smaller than the original ones, and didn't fit in the holes properly. A little silicon has kept them in their for about five years now. Anyhow, I will try and get the part number for these if I can find the extra ones that I have. Hope this help.

None of my Patrols have problems with the hoodsagging under the weight of the windshield. One ofthem has a brace that someone installed before I gotit. It looks crude underneath but does not come through to the top. I can try to get a pic of itfor later. I also have one of the original rubberbumper things for the winshield to rest on. I havethought about trying to have them duplicated. I willhave to see. Let me know if anyone is interested.-Jeff

Hello all! Since the majority of comments seem to be about the rubber hood stops (for the windshield), check Gary's comment in the posting "More Patrol Sources?" NISSANAUTOPARTS.COM has the hood stops in stock! Good Luck!!

I never had a problem with this....great design by NISSAn i thought....large fairly soft rubber groments on hoog, nicely placed spring loaded hooks, underside of hood reenforced with cross section steel....possibly these items were options?
